Foam Rolling

Just bought a cheap Foam Roller from Wal-Mart. Just did a few basic leg rolls that I checked out online and it was painful, but in a good way.

I got the foam roller specifically for the few days following a leg workout, so that I can help expedite recovery. However I am just curious as to what routine you guys who foam roll do.

Should I be foam rolling every day? Should I do it before or after a workout?

My old trainer used to have me use it to loosen up my calves...

Works good on hams 2....

I use it everyday for rehab and prehab. I also use a tennis ball and lacrosse ball to target trigger points. Alot of people get low back pain and using the roller and balls on the glutes and it bands greatly alleviates this stiffness and pain. I start rolling on the upper back and shoulders. Then move to the glutes and down to the hams and calves. I flip over and hit my quads and work the chest. I use the ball on the delts and traps.

Foam roll as often as you like, even daily if you wish. There isn't a performance downside to foam rolling very frequently.

It's gonna be sore, and that means its working. I foam roll whenever I have time. Use the racquet ball/tennis ball if you can, those are REALLY good for spots that require a bit more depth.

I spent alot of $$ on a real high end very dense foam roller. Wore it out in 6 mos. Graduated to a 3 foot long piece of 6" diameter PVC pipe. That fucker will never wear out and it cost me $15.00.
yes it hurts a little to get used to but its better than the foam one IMO.
I use it multiple times daily. Keeps my spine in adjustment. Keeps my under arm rotator muscles stretched out.
Go on youtube and fine Defranco's gym. theres a great upper body warm up segment in there with a foam roller.

Check out vids on youtube for all the various foam rolling techniques. I definitely makes a huge difference in your workouts if you stretch then foam roll before lifting

Wow. That's a great idea! Lol. Good stuff.

You don't worry about cracking it?

The beginner shouldn't foam roll with pvc or steel pipe... I would recomend wearing out a foam roller legit before moving onto something harder... but yes I know guys who do both pvc and steel but you really have to build up to that.

I just use a regular 18"x6" foam roller myself.
