fast one mile=carry over to better long distance stamina?

for me i think it does.
case in point: i haven't been hitting the cardio at all for the last 3-4 months...about three weeks ago started hitting the track again, focusing on getting my mile time down.
3 times a week, various combinations of short sprints and 1 mile runs...first week in the 10s, 3 weeks later in the mid 7s with sub 7 easily obtainable in the coming days.
so today i trail ran 5 miles, in high desert elevation up and down switchbacks.
pretty grueling, but my per mile time was 12 minutes, pretty respectable considering the terrian and elevation...about par for the course for me when i'm in peak running condition.
and the max i've been running is a two miles per session (one fast mile one slow)
any commentary?

best thing to do is cater the distance to the goal (e.g 1/4s for 5k; 1/2s for 5k/10k; and miles for 1/2 marathons+). for overall stamina, have the workout dictated by heart rate.

the key is to learn to run at AT an teach your legs to run fast--sound stupid, but its true.

my goal is to be a better hiker/grueling worker.
i work in wildland fire.
i was thinking hill running with a mixture of fast miles would be a good regime
what do you think?

hill running servers two purposed (1) form--your uphill form is perfect for flat racing; and (2) strength training to exhaustion.

b/c of your job, I would play with some of the strongman workouts---farmers carry etc as it is anaerobic and gives crazy core strength....maybe run a fast 1/2 mile than walk 100 yards w/100lb d-bells--then drag a 200lb bag....then when you reach the other side of the track carry a full scott pack or packed backpack up the stadium stairs

the problem with your job is you can go from cutting a line at 130 bpm to 180 bpm life or death run.

let me think on it a bit--i may have some ideas.....

hey bro, and I do agree with you fast one mile=carry over. If you're trying to carry your speed of the one mile to help you with your distance than I recomend since you only been doing this for a few weeks take it slow you dont want to rush into distance runing.
I'll write a runing program for you if you want just let me know

sure bro i'll read it, it won't go to waste
i hit the weights 3 times a week...sq day, bench/military day, and dl day.
following each sess i hit the track...one day, balls out 1 mile run, second day sprint a 1/4 mile walk 1/4 mile, and last day med pace two mile, about 18 minutes time for this.
on my off days, tues/thurs/sat/sun i either distance run or hike on at least two days

ps just so you know, even though i haven't been cardioing it's not like i'm a lazy bum...i've lifted for 10 yrs without stopping...and my winter job invovles a lotta exercise...so even out of peak cardio shape i feel i'm still pretty cardio stout

yeh bro, u seem like your still in pretty good shape.
But if you want to get your mile down and add some more distance to ya run i'll write it up 2 nite for ya. Its nothing too fancy bro just something to keep ya hungry for more

i got a sub 7 mile today
pretty gassed though, laid on the ground for a few minutes
not bad

a faster one mile will definitely carry over to longer distance stamina. another thing i'd suggest you look into is "tabata". this will definitely blow up your stamina!
