ed coan/westside hybrid

i've used the standard coan routine with alot of luck,i put 25-30lbs on all my core lifts.personally i like it.I'm also interested in the westside training style.Could you mix the two? What i have in mind is a 12wk program for instance the bench press workout would go like this start with 2 work sets of flat bench(coan)then go to board press for 2rm or 1rm, then do tricep, back and shoulder work.I was going to alternate board press ever 2wks with some of the other westside exercises.Well this is just an idea and i wanted to see what you guys thought about it.

doesnt seem like it...

coan emphasizes consistency and does basically the same thing week in and out.

also in article in t-mag he didnt seem like he ...really thought all that much of simmons...

he said he tried floor presses and didnt like em, and said he might try some...board presses but thats it...

Thats an interseting idea, tell us how it works for you. Another possible way to try the different methods is to do westside on upper body and do a Coan routine on legs.

I think that Coan's routine is designed for him specifically. There is another atricle on t-mag that decribes the differences between Coan and westside's routines. They basicly say that westide is designed to work bst for most of the population and Coan's routine works best for short limbed (arms, legs) lifters like Ed.

Ed Coan is anything but short limbed. He has very long arms and his legs are in proportion to his body. He is however an excellent bencher esp with those long arms. Remember -- his benches aredone wearing a single ply poly, not the dbl denim most of us use these days.

Hey 1-Dawg...

Doesn't Ed Coan use a double denim when they are allowed and his competitors are using doubles??? I would wear what the rules allowed. No reason to go in at a disadvantage even if you are one of the greatest powerlifters ever.

I think he still used a poly at the wpo meet last year. I was at the meet but left after the squats -- it was fucking midnight by that time. If he did use a denim it would have been hs first time ever because all of his othe rmeet have been USPF, with the exception of severla year ago when he lifted APF during his suspension. I agree though -- it would be stupid to lift in single ply where dbl is allowed, esp when money is at stake. It's a whole new ballgame when you throw in money. Ue anything and everything that is allowed. Truth of the matter, ed coan could whip all the other 242'ers out there in single ply gear.

I used Coans routine to a T for about 6 months last year. I did very well on it but there are a few factors that may have had something to do with it. Number one, I had just started bulking back up after losing 20lbs of fat for a bodybuilding show. I did see great gains though, mostly on my bench but great gains none the less. I motified it after the 6 month time period and got even better gains though. I also tried westside for 12 weeks and didnt really like it. I didnt like it because it only seemed to help my shirted max go up and not my raw max. Anyway, to each his own.

Yeah sorry 1-dawg, I thought he had short arms but he does indeed have long arms for his 5'5 height I remember now.

I am surprised that he doesnt wear a double denim, I wonder why.

i think any routine will work for awhile.

i have had successes on many different training styles, including a coan-esque program.

to me the key is keeping your mind fresh and staying motivated. its very hard for me to follow a standard drop the reps, up the weight program like coan's because i feel an enormous pressure every week to hit my weights.

on westside, i can just back down if i am having a week i feel flat on. also, there are so many varieties of things you can do, the program is constantly fun.

i also throw in bodybuilding shit that would appall the westside boys.... just cause it keeps me motivated and my partners happy.
