Does where you train effect strength????

Well yesterday was chest day, however I was at a gym in NYC not at my home gym. I found a spotter. Put up 225 for 12 easy reps. Then I put on 275 and only cranked out 6 reps on my flat bench. WTF. Last week at home I did 285 for 5 easy reps. I felt distracted w/ all the noise, lights blaring in my eyes.

Is it possible to get in such a groove at one location that training anywhere else could hinder your lifts?

If something is distracting you it certainly isn’t going to help with your lifting.

Additionally, this is something I posted in this thread:

I think it is more common that people realise...

Are you sure it’s not the plates? I’m sure there are some small variations between the weights of plate sets at different gyms. Usually it isn’t going to make a huge difference if a plate is + or – 0.5 or 0.25 lb, but when you put 2, 3 or 4 on each side of the bar it adds up, specially when you are pushing yourself to the limit of your abilities!

Also, are you using collars? These can be anything up to 5 lbs! Are the benches the same height from the floor? This gives you a different arch in your back with your feet on the floor. Also I find the atmosphere in the gym makes a big difference. Sometimes it is just impossible to concentrate…

i think that where you train definitely affects your strength. sometimes it's very humid and warm like a damn steamroom in our shed where i train. sometimes this fires me up,sometimes it sucks donkey balls, big time. on the other hand, where i used to train for a while (yuppie 'gym') wasn't very motivating either.

Any environmental change will effect training. That is why a lot of lifters lift in different gyms from time to time so they don't get so used to one environment that they are effected on comp day in a strange gym. Also I live in Denver which is a mile in altitude when I travel to lower elevations my strength goes up for a couple of days. Thus the reason the us training center is in colorado springs so the atheletes build up better oxygen capacity for competing usually at lower altitudes.

yeah it can effect you, but train your mind for it not too. like i train at the gym, and then i train outside doing events......... its really weird but you adjust quickly.
