Boxing Styles

Hey whats up guys. Since this is my first post here, I thought I'd do a short intro.
Well, I'm 21, weigh in at around 200 lbs (don't know my bodyfat, but the ab outline is visible when flexed), and I'm 5'9" tall.
I've been involved in martial arts (aikido) for about 6 years, but i have not practiced it for about 8 months due to costs (which seem to increase on an annual basis), and due to the fact that it's not a combat-practical art.
I have been working out with weights for about the last 5 years, with the last 2 or 3 being fairly serious, a style i like to call "powerbuilding" (didn't come up wth that one, but liked how it sounded).

So, on to my question......

See, I have started boxing recently, and I love it. Got hooked right after the first practice. I was wondering about the differet boxing styles. I heard they have some pretty colorful names, but the only one I know is the "southpaw". I know that refers to the left-handed fighter, but I have no idea how the name originated.

I also heard the term "slugger" but even though i could kinda guess, it's still not clear.

So, guys that are into boxing, and also the ones that just know, can you list the styles that you heard about before, and tell me a little about their origin, and what the style means. Hope that's not too stupid of a question to be my first on this board.

About the help with the street fighting, I gotta pass on that one, bro. Street fighting got me in a lot of trouble, actually, being an immigrant, and trying to defend myself ( it was a 8 vs. 3 of us), people involved (the other party) turned it all around, and now all 3 of us are in some shit.

About the styles, though, I kind of found out more form one of the trainers. So, for all those intersted, here they are:

1. Slugger. Thats your guy that relies on the power punches. He doesn't move that much, and pretty much wants to land that one punch that knocks his opponent's head off.

2. Puncher. That's a guy that moves around a lot, and throws a lot of punches at you. Has nice footwork, head and body movement. His/her punches are not necessarily all that powerful.

3. Boxer. Thats a fighter that is all about strategy, finding his opponent's weaknesses, and tries to exploit them. It's your classical fighter, smooth and calm.

I think there are more, but these are the 3 most general classifications. Also, many people fall into more than one catregory, and they share different characteristics of the 3 styles.

Everybodys got their own style, but yeah, the main ones are "slugger"(Tyson/Marciano) "boxer"(Ali), and "boxer/puncher" (RJ Jr./F. Mayweather). Theres also expert "counterpunchers" like James Toney/Evander Holy. Truth is, everyones got their own style, which they should, as everyones different. FInd your own strengths and weaknesses and go from there. Not everybody (actually closer to nobody) should be trying to emulate Ali/Roy Jones/etc when it comes to their own style, it will only slow your progress as a boxer. Heres some good links for ya:

a boxer is the master of hitting without getting hit, the puncher is master of hurting someone when he hits them.

i also did some aikido (a year) and boxing (seriously, for several years), and i agree with your combat analysis. however, i've used just about every bit of circular, off angle, and evasive footwork i learned in aikido in boxing...except when i learned how to do it from a boxing coach, i learned how to actually DO IT when someone was trying to knock my block off.

my boxing is serving me quite well in MMA...you'd be amazed at how few people really know how to punch effectively.
