Box Squats?

Sorry for being ignorant, but what are these exactly? I am trying to add a few powerlifting movements to my routine.

By looking at the videos, it just seems that they sit on something ("box"?) and then everything else is just like a regular squat. Do I have this right or is there different foot position or something I am missing?

Also, how is this exactly better than a regular squat? I mean why not just use regular squats instead, what are the benefits of doing both?

Thanks.

It can be great for learning proper form.

The main reason we boxsquat is to break up the lift. Instead of using spring or reversal strength, you actually stop all momentum and have to drive up from a stand-still. It's like the difference between bouncing a benchpress off your chest and benching with a pause. We train with a pause, then in competition the squat seems easier.

Another advantage is that you always know you're going to the right height.

Ahh, the pause, sounds good. :)

They are also a lot easier on the knees since sitting back onto a box allows you to keep a 0 or negative shin angle. I do this to put all emphasis on my hams and hips and glutes. I then do front squats to make up the difference.
