I have been below 5%. I'm skinny, so it's REAL unhealthy for me (skinny means less muscle, so at 4% there is almost NO fat anywhere).
I tend to stay around 7% though, year round. This means I do not gain much muscle at all...maybe 1-2 lbs per year, with cycles.
PEople here are right when they say 4% is almost mythical. When I was sub 5% I had EVERYTHING showing. All serratus, obliques, striations in the delts...you name it and it was there clear as a bell.
People ask if I am 5% now and I am probably 7 or 8...most people do not know bodyfat at all. My abs show clearly at 8%. These magazines reporting football players at 4% and lower is just pure bullshit.
Your leanest pros are probably 4% on the day of the show. They claim lower, but I doubt its true.
Anyway, I can tell you that when I am 5% I bruise from just touching things. I get sick easy. My face looks like a grinning skull. I'm angry and irritable and starving all the time.
The fact is that 6% looks about as good as 4% without the sick striations, and is a hell of a lot easier to hold.
