Atkins hell no Its The Zane Diet

Maybe its just me. Maybe I am to old. Mybe people just dont realize it. But Frank Zane should be crdited with the low carb, high protien, high fat diet. He was using it with great success long before the Atkins craze. And for those who think it is the end all, cure all of the dieting world its not. For those like Zane that it works for it is a god send. Others seem to fail miserably using it and there are many other methods for stripping that fat from the physique. Try it, if it works use it. If it fails go on to the next method. But just remember it is the Zane diet for us old bodybuilders.

so Zane started this diet over 20 years ago? Because that is when Atkins came up with it. Also, the only people who Atkins doesnt work for is those who cheat on it. Atkin's diet doesn't allow cheating because it depends on a biolgical process that take awhile to get started and is broken by cheating, then you eat foods that if you are not in ketosis would normally make you fat, hell no it won't work for them.

And these messages illustrate the confusion between the 2.

Zane advocated a LOW carb diet but there was still enough carbs so that the body primarily used ingested carbs as a fuel source.

Atkins uses almost NO carbs (like less than maybe 20-30 grams a DAY) so that the body does NOT use carbs for fuel, but the body if forced into Ketosis, and therefore is primarily using fat (and fat converted to ketones) as fuel.

There is a big difference between a diet that uses extremely low carbs (like Atkins) and those which use just low carbs (lie Zane).

The Atkins challenge (as stated earlier) is that you MUST stay on EXTREMELY LOW CARBS to stay in Ketosis.

I am a huge Zane fan, and think he had one of the best physiques ever, but his dieting was NOT like Atkins.

Yes you are right that Zane used just a low carb diet. He did not have the knowledge of the physiology of the body as did Atkins. Zane was probably the most intuned to his body than any other bodybuilder of his time. He went by the way he felt, the way he looked, and his very in depth journals to gauge where he was and where he was going. He raised or lowered his carbs according to his progress. He was also one of the first, and one of the biggest proponents of the mind body connection.

As for, it works if you dont cheat. You may be right on the money. The point being if you cant do it without cheating it will never work. That is not to say that you will not succedd with another method. Some people get violently ill on the "atkins"diet. For them another method Will work. You have to find what works for you and stick with it.

I am unfamiliar with Zane's diet, But that may be what I am doing now. I keep carbs as low as possible but I do get as many as 75-85 carbs a day and maybe 100 g tops. But on the other hand, I don't eat high fat food either as I know I am not in a constant state of ketosis and my body would likely pack lbs right on. I think with a low carb diet your body becomes used to using fat as fuel more often then a traditional balanced diet but not as much as an atkins diet. I just can never get used to the idea that it is ok to eat lots of high fat foods and I have lost a lot of BF with my current diet. But I beleive in ATkin's and low carb diets,

Low fat diets have consistently shown that they are not the only diets out there and have been unsuccessful for many dieters, yet mainstream medicine and dieticians are just begining to pay attention to what Dr. Atkins and his research has shown for years.

This is the diet i use as well as others i compete with. In addition to cycling carb intake periodically. This diet seems to work best but is most difficult for people to follow, but bbers are not regular ppl, thus----->Atkins diet to make it easier. I also share your view of ultra low carb diets in that they work but 1. arent for everyone. 2. if/wehn you come off and cant control how you do you will get fat again.

One must seperate a bbers diet for cutting from the rest of dieters.
