The Arnold era was one where the bodybuilders actually looked appealing. He had a nice amount of fat and he didnt look grossly shredded like many of the idiots these days.

I think that Arnold had the best looking body in history and IMO, judges of the contests should penalise those who look disgusting. Bunch of fucking idiots the judges are these days for encouraging the absolutely shredded look.

I agree totally! Arnold skin was smooth and his body was amazing. His legs has size and definition but not too much. I don't even enjoy today's bodybuilding. And Dorian could have been the worst thing to happen to bodybuilding. I think his build is horrible and now that he won so many times I guess that is the look the judges are looking for.
 
i can't believe people debate Arnold's physique by comparing it to the physiques of the pros today....it's just not logical....blah blah blah.....


this is like saying MS DOS was a crap operating system because it couldn't do what WindowsXP can do.....


here's a clue people, it's called PROGRESS, and it tends to happen over time and through trial and error.

I'd guess bodybuilding 30 yrs from now is gonna be completely different that it is today....who knows maybe the bloated overgrown look will be out...lol
 
It used to be about looking good; now it's about being big. Anybody else a little troubled by that?

I think all the people talking shit about Arnolds training should take a closer look. He only really has you do one work set per exercise. If you read the book, he has you pyramid up the weight. So the first 3 sets are clearly easy warmups, and the 4th set is the heavy work set. As for the double split, people on HST do it, but it's called am pm training.


Considering a lot of us train the body 2-3 times a week as of late, Arnold wasn't that far off. Those doing dc, do 1 set per bodypart, hst 1 set per exercise (and if you do the am pm, you can get away with 2), and df many sets twice a week. Suddenly Arnolds training each part 2-3 times a week, using about three work sets for large muscle groups, and 2 work sets for smaller groups such as biceps isn't that bad at all.

Heh, not always. I do one, but many people do 2 or even 3. The official recommendation is "As much as you can handle without burning out at 3x/week." That varies by person.

But yeah, I don't think Arnold so much knew what he was doing as he was following the precedent. Right before Arnold everybody was doing the high frequency thing.

you do pyramid, but fail on all the sets leading up to your last.

Anyway, I got some good gains from it (60lbs on bench in a little under 6 months, not bad) and some good ideas from it too. At first, when I was training with that high of volume for a bodypart 2x a week I couldn't recover fast enough for the next workout. I went ahead and trained it anyway even if I was still sore as hell and eventually my body adjusted.
