Anyone familiar with Gluten Intolerance???

HI!
As I have mentioned in most of my posts, I have been battling a bad weight gain since my figure compeition almost 6 months ago now. I am weighing 20 pounds over my contest weight, and about 10 pounds more than I usually weigh for a normal weight. I CANNOT lose weight!!!! I have tried everything from chaning workouts, not working out, changing my diet, etc. Nothing is working. I was recently told I may have a gluten intolerance. Is anyone familiar with this??? I dont have much gluten in my diet anyway, but the little I do have I am cutting out, to see if I can drop any weight. that will be a good indiciation if that is my problem. I have the weight gain symptom, but I also get extremely tired after I eat high carb foods (on a cheat day for example), like pizza. I will fall asleep ASAP after that! Anyone have any experience with this???? Sound familiar??

That's more likely to be a crash in blood glucose from eating high GI carbs and the resulting insulin spike. If that sleepiness after carb meals never occurs when you are eating low GI carbs, then you're ok. That's a normal reaction. If however you get sleepy after eating oatmeal, quinoa, sweet potatoes, pinto beans, etc you should get your fasting insulin level checked to assess for insulin resistance.

As for gluten intolerance, I'm quite familiar. The symptoms of it are legion. Very hard to say for sure if you suffering noticeable symptoms of it since there are so many and they vary from one person to the next. Best way to rule out gluten intolerance is to eliminate it and see how you feel. Sorghhum flour, tapioca flour, and rice flour are totally gluten free. Also, watch out for store bought seasoning and sauces as they can often have "hidden" gluten. For example many chili seasoning mixes contain gluten. Read the ingredient panels of any canned and boxed foods for gluten.

Test the pizza thing by buying a gluten free rice crust pizza and eat that. Amy's brand is available in most larger grocery stores. If you get sleep afterward, it's the carbs.
