I have found that exercises which have your torso moving through a plane tend to stimulate and "threaten" the body the most, giving more of a distress signal for muscle growth.
e.g, there is absolutely no comparison between the wide-grip pull-up and lat pulldown, i've seen people in the gym who can pulldown 170-180 lbs but struggle with the wide grip, however, every person who i've seen do lots of pullups, weighted or unweighted can pulldown ALOT of weight.
These are the "king" exercises, which make you go through that motion.
Squat.
Deadlift.
Pull-ups.
Chin-ups.
Dips.
Decline weighted push-ups.
Could add more weight once your reps are high enough for the last 4 exercises.
I've benefitted so much from these. Just my 2 cents.
