1 body part split or not?

Ive been doing a 1 body part split 4 times a week for a few years now and feel i have not made great progress at all from this. After reading a few bodybuilding books its been advised to leave this sort of split alone untill you build a decent amount of muscle and mass through doing full body workouts or a 2 body part split, would i be right in doing this?
 
Its actually really simple.

Do the big four lifts - dead lift, squat, clean & press, and bench. Go heavy.

Eat everything that is not nailed down and drink lots of milk.

Get big.

Now you can have a hamstring day or bicep day if you want.

then why have you continued to do it for a few years if you weren't making progress? what the hell!!!
