why do weightlifters sniff ammonia

Ned Clarence

I've seen two guys at my gym lockers sniffing ammonia before they start lifting, and those guys are probably some of the biggest guys at my gym, one of them even competes. I was too affraid to ask, but I could smell it from across the room, what's the effect of ammonia on your body and how does it help on your work ?

Shocks the system. Throws it in overdrive through adrenaline I believe.

It does not really help a workout, and I would rather say that it is a very unhealthy thing to do. However, they do so right before pushing a maximum weight, to get their bodies full of adrenaline and rushed up.

lots of football players will do this on the sideline. as has been said it will give you a shock/adrenaline rush.

if you are a normal gym rat like 99% of us you do not need to bother doing this. it is a perfect example of NOT following the biggest dudes in the gym. another stupid thing that the big dudes might do in your gym is use anti-inflams before their workout to kill pain. those are the guys who end up fucked up in the end so you should not always just follow the strong dude

It stimulates the CNS and gives you a rush and gets your fired up.

Smelling salts release ammonia (NH[SUB]3[/SUB]) gas, which triggers an inhalation reflex by irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs. The irritant elevates the heart rate, blood pressure, and brain activity by activating the sympathetic nervous system.
