Vince Gironda 8x8, don't drink water? wtf?

I've been doing a Vince Gironda 8x8 for about two weeks now and love the routine. But I've got a question... The information I read about this routine suggested that one NOT drink any fluids during their workout or for 45min after the workout and then to just sip water for about an hour before drinking normally.

This sounds contrary to all basic knowledge of getting the body energy and staying hydrated during a work out that I have ever heard or read.

Anyone know the rationale behind this recommendation? I doubt I'll follow this, but I am super curious about it.

even if this somehow gave you an advantage I still would not do it.

being fully hydrated before, during and after a workout is highly recommended. I drink a good half gallon during my workouts as I lose a lot of fluids along the way. and if i am not hydrated before my workout i get light headed quickly.

Need a belt

So with the new routine I have submitted myself to I have found that I'm going to have to start wearing a belt on my squat and DL days. It is unavoidable, I can no longer opt to not wear one because it will weaken my core if I do, I just cant risk an injury.

So any recommendations, I am literally about to just go to Wal-Mart and grab one. I'm not trying to break the bank on a belt. Anyone have some cheap options for a solid powerlifting belt?

roofus it seems like I read somewhere that the 8x8 was for show prep. So my guess is that Vince was trying to get his trainees to loose all the water that they possilby could.
I fully agree with steve drink water before, during and after your workout. It is proven that this will help your performance, as well as its juts plain healthy.

Mike-I got a great belt from elitefts.com...its like 60 bucks (4" economy belt), high quality leather and single prong. They are also running a 20% off customer appreciation sale so youre looking at around 50 bucks for a belt thatll last and actually protect you. I can't imagine the cheap golds gym belt from walmart doing much before falling apart.

yes this is what i was thinking. when i did my photo's i did not drink or eat the entire morning.. i felt like i was gonna collapse, but it helped me look better for my photo's. i think the 2 EF contest winners PLJ and WC said they barely drank anything for 2 days prior and were extremely de-hydrated going into the shoot

so unless someone who prepping for a contest or shoot.. then this advice isn't necessary.

This makes sense. I was just curious about the rationale behind it and these are probably the most likely answers. Thanks for the replies.

I'm probably 15lbs from being anywhere near any type of contest shape, so we can all rest easy that I won't be doing this. lol
