The "damn it" moment

You hit a new PB, be proud of that! Who cares what another guy is doing???? Focus on the positive of the day...

Besides it's all about the mirror, not the number on the dumbbell/bar

there is a lot of truth in that... body building and strength training are 2 different things..

and remember to check the ego at the door.. that's one that Myself and many have to remember all the time..

Yeah for sure. I have seen these old black guys with hair falling out putting 4 plates on the bench press like its another day at the gym...

Black guys are typically genetic superiors. I train at at gym that is about 60/40 black folks to whiteys. I would say 80% of the black guys are jacked/ripped/strong especially considering how shitty they train. Lotsa curls and presses. Very little back or leg work, but these guys have no shortage of muscle all over. Most of the white boys in my gym are chumps.

I don't believe in that at all... I played football for years, our team was dominately white and we completely destroyed teams that were dominately black. I think there is a different mind set though, black people tend to be raised with a more physical physiology, whereas whites tend to have a more emotional physiology. So as a population whole, this would explain why the average IQ of whites is statsitically significantly higher than those of blacks, and why blacks dominate the porportion of the NFL players. That is why the atheletes of the white school can make a dominate team, and why the the intelligent kids from a predominately black school can still compete on debate teams, as well. I believe that nature makes you who you are and nurture makes you who you become. In this case I think the difference can be explained by nurture and not nature.

and there is nothing more satisfying than for one of us "old guys" lifts more, and looks better than you younger guys.. good to know it gets to you..

Now, often someone that is smaller or not as strong should look to that person for advice, or motivation if nothing else, most guys are not as arrogant as you may think.. but please please please do not interrupt my workout, just wait til we are in between sets... when we give advice, take it, do it, or don't but don't tell us we are wrong.. we've been here a little while and only recommend what has worked for us..

thanks

"old guy"
Haha, no, I completely respect the "old guys" of my gym, I actually really enjoy listening to them talk about their workouts, and yah I couldn't even imagine interupting someone during their workout, who would do that? I look at it like this, "old guy"
The worst part wasn't that he was a lot bigger than me, even though there are several "old guys' in my gym that are (and I'm a fairly big guy, especially for my age), actually he was about the same size if not a little smaller and he repped out more weight than me.... but this is just a joke, a true story, but a joke all the same

I feel more comfortable working out with older guys, most of them know their stuff, are quite, polite and helpful. I really have a problem with teenagers and some college kids noobs, they hang out in groups pushing each other with bad form, talking loud, begging for an injury, knowing-all atitude, leaving the weights all over the floor, I really can't focus with these guys around and I really have to keep a watchful position because i would feel bad if anyone gets hurt in front of me. I have this trauma of seeing this guy breaking is teeth and upper jaw with lose plates from a dumbell doing pullovers :worried:

I like working out with older guys too... one of my favorite workout partners was two black guys about 34 and 36, they were big and strong, but they were loud as hell, they would yell at me to get the weights up, it was actually probably pretty good motivation, especially since I was still playing football. I still see them at the gym but they come in later to workout so I can't work with them anymore, also they are big enough now to pull off that one muscle group a day workout routine, whereas I'm doing the 5x5 (I can't get any of my friends to join me on this workout because they all want to do the one group a day thing too, to look like the big guys, I try to explain that my workout would get them there faster but they don't believe me, so I have to workout alone :().

5x5 it's the type of workout I would do alone, nobody to bother me, giving opinions stuff like that.

Yah, but it would be useful for saftey reasons with such quick progression in growth of weights, also I would like someone there to tell me that my form is perfect and if not what I should do to fix it (I don't own a video camera).

Especially that carrot hair kid called Joe that you talk to?

& as for the damn it moment, there is this asian guy at my gym, thinning hair and he is what you would call skinny-fat lol. Other day I watched him kick up the 70's and shoulders press them like nothing! Fuck I would have never guessed! I also saw him warming up with 135 on the flat bench easy as pie too, never saw his work sets but 135 is quite a bit of weight at my gym, most iv ever seen benched there is 235. Oh and 4 wheels a side on the smith buy this jacked up BB'er who comes every so often but the majority of people bench 90-180lbs.

The fear of failure should sharpen your senses!

Yeah sometimes it's hard, for benching I always need a spotter just in case!
