Romanian DL vs Straight Leg DL - are they the same?

I've been reading discriptions of them. Are they the same or is range of motion the difference?

When I do straight leg DLs I touch the weights to the floor. Most of the Romanian DL articles I've found say dont go down much past the knees.

I've done stiff leg DLs before but I didn't feel it in the hams much.

I think you just answered your own question.

romanian dl's have a slight bend in the knees. with that and your back absolutely flat you should stop somewhere around your mid/upper shin when you feel a stretch. most people do straight legs and actually bend their back a bit to get down to the "bottom".

there definitely is a difference.

RDL = slow hang clean pull - well I do em pretty explosively

if you do it right then you will not go much past your knees. If you do your back is rounding. You stick you butt as far back as you can go, while the bar goes straight down close to your body. Leg bend is a matter of tastes, my legs only bend a tiny bit

You'll also get an awesome calf workout if you explode onto you toes as you lockout and hold for a sec - might as well shrug the bar, like your doing a clean pull.

If you do it right you'll be sore in your posterior from neck down to your toes - you'll have DOMS in your hams for a few days, even up to a week! :)

Say CoolCat-would you please explain the method you use? I am having a hard time visualizing it. Also thanks for the links you post, have been helpful to me and others, I'm sure.-valerie
