pullups

leatherface said:
How many regular pull ups do you think you would have to be able to do, before you could do a 1-arm pull up? Not that the 1-arm pull up would serve any purpose, im just curious like usual! :)

Grip strength would probably be a factor on a one arm pullup. Whenever I tried it my body would start to spin or turn to one side. NO I never got close. I used to however do the old "hold one wrist with the other hand one arm pullup" for ego I guess

If you think that`s hard try a one legged 500lb squat! lol or a 2 legged 500lb squat!

This past summer I went with a couple friends to Chicago's Annual Air Show on the lakefront. There's always TONS of people and this day was no exception. Anyway, these two army guys had set up a pull up bar, and were conducting an impromptu pull-up contest. After they'd attracted a crowd of about 100 people to surround the pull-up bar area (many in the crowd were HOT Chicago women), they announced that anyone who could beat one of them in doing a max for pullups would win a free T-shirt and hat.

Me and my 2 friends work out, and we're all of decent sizes and strengths, but I knew that pull-ups are different from traditional gym lifts b/c you have to be strong BUT relatively lean & light too. That fact alone precluded me and one of my friends from trying (and getting embarrassed). The army guy did like 13 or so. My other friend, whom we all knew could do around 20, was about to step up and kick army boy's ass when in steps this black dude... about 5'6", 220 or so, stocky as hell, but not fat--it was ALL muscle. He stepped up and easily churned out 27! The crowd went crazy and he took the badass crown for the day.

I promised myself that this summer I'm gonna go back there, and damn it, I'm gonna win this time.

:D

Oreo,

Yes! I agree with you. I'm not a huge guy but my entire life I've been able to do one-hand pull ups by holding my fixed wrist with the free one. I don't know if that qualifies as a one-hander but I do know that it has alot more to do with my grip/forearms than it does with my other muscle groups. I have an exceptional grip (I have to be carefull when I whack-off not do any damage!) and can usually do 2 (more on a good day) good form one-handers without psyching myself up too much. I don't do them very often at all cause I don't see the use other than "showing off" which in a gym setting is IDIOTIC (start showing off and injuries tend to occur on yourself and other trying to "beat you").

Wide grip pull ups are far, far more impressive anyway! They are truely my nemesis! If a guy with some good mass can do 2X10 w.g.p.u. I am TOTALLY impressed!

I watched a chick day before yesterday do 3X8 wgpu and man I wanted her right there! The entire gym stopped and watched her (I don't think she was aware of it though), and she was no Barbie doll either. Still...wow!

I used to do over 20 pullups, but could never do a true 1 hand pullup.

At that time I could do like 15 or 17 pullups gripping the bar with my right hand and my right wrist with my left hand though.

Now I'm 25 lbs heavier and can do about 12 pullups probably :(
