popping sternum from dips

jolly man

New member
Hey guys this has really been bothering me, every time i do dips or muscle ups, i get this popping in my sternum and once i finish my sternum hurts, and sometimes the next morning it gets really really stiff, how do i fix it?

Best advice if doing an exercise causes pain , then stop doing it. If you wish a more complete answer , a sports doctor might be able to give you the answer as to why you have inflammation (my first assumption) in the rib cage / sternum area from doing dips. There is a thread on T-nation that I just read where several people had this problem and say it's costochondritis (inflammation) from lifting and that it goes away with time

I personally wouldn't assume this from people who lift and dont know much about orthapedics. I personally would still see the sports doctor if you have insurance and the pain continues...

id avoid the muscle ups without a doubt unless you are on a crosstraining style of workout but still theres not much to gain from them and a lot of risk. If there is any pain I would stop... although if you are completely against seeing a sports doctor like gjohnson said, you could try resting it for a couple weeks to get inflammation down and then build up slowly by starting with a shorter range of motion and bending more over at the hips to have less glenohumeral joint movement. Might relieve some of the pressure going through your clavicle.

I've noticed that popping during dips sometimes. It doesn't hurt so I never really worried about it. I figure it is like cracking your knuckles or your neck. But if it hurts, thats a different story. Stop doing it. It sounds like tendonitis where your pec attaches to the sternum. I think maybe the popping sound and the pain are 2 unrelated things.
