us young 'uns seem to bothering you a lot lately for advice huh?:D anyway, i was reading the 5x5 thread and i'm DEFINITELY gonna try it, exactly what i need to get out of my recent training "depression" anyway, from what i understand, the 5x5 exercise is supposed to be a compound exercise right?
now, i'm a little in the dark about what the definition of a compound exercise IS. would you consider bent over rows a compound exercise? thnx in advance

Bent over rows would be considered a compound exercise, but for back I would use deadlifts for your compound 5x5 movement, then pulldowns/chins, and some sort of rows for the 8-10 rep sets, you'll gain much more size that way. I found what really worked well for me and cut down on overlap between workouts, was to train shoulders on the same day.
Here's my favorite back/shoulders routine
military press 5x5
deads 5x5
side laterals 2x8-10
chins 2x8-10
rows 2x8-10
shrugs 2x8-10
bent over laterals 2x8-10

It seems like a lot of sets, but I then take the next 2 days off to rest, and my back and shoulders have grown like crazy from this

well i'll give that a shot then! the problem is that i'm new to deads, and i'm trying to ease my way into getting perfect form, since i can't seem to get the hang of them (this is partly due to a bad back), so for the time being, i was planning to do bent over rows. i'm really psyched up about this 5x5 method, i'm starting it tomorrow! thnx for the help

Use the 5x5 to work on your dead form, that's one of the great things about it. It's not to failure, especially early in the program, so you can concentrate on getting the feel of an exercise and nailing the form

well that DOES make sense. i'll try it then. no let me put that differently: i'll DO it. also, i take it you do a warmup set before your 5x5 work and then go at it? so it would look like

warmup set
exercise 1: 5x5
exercise 2: 2x8
exercise 3: 2x8

damn, i'm really itchin' to try it!

Thats' the routine, but I do more than 1 warmup set before hitting the big stuff, here's an example, I do enough to get warmed up but not enough to tire me out
deads
135 x6
225x5
315x3
405x3
455x1
then 5x5 on say 525lbs

SAGAT, listen to the man. His routine kicks ass. I combined it with a form of Cornholio's old school deal and I'm gaining strength like crazy. Puttin on some weight too.

oh believe me, i'm listening!! i'll try it this way, thanks again for the help needsize!
