Or is there no such thing as exercises or rep/sets that shape/define a muscle? I keep hearing talk of this from my friends that work out (who have Personal Trainer's). I just think mass is mass, and you might as well not waste time on movements/rep schemes that have little effect.

genetics determine the shape of the muscle. i have thick long biceps....... but no peak........ so no matter how much i specialize, no exerices or set/rep scheme will ever make them peak. the pt's should be ashamed for saying such a silly thing.

It isn't just you :)

No disrespect to those knowledgable PTs who frequent this board, but you'd be well advised to believe the opposite of whatever your friend's PTs say.

I'm a personal trainer. I agree wholeheartadly that a majority of personal trainers make the "wrong" suggestions. Wrong meaning that their suggestions generally aren't for an althletic population. Many have just enough knowledge to pass an online or mail order certification that means very little in the big scheme of things. Many follow guidelines that are set for the general population.

If you're looking for something beyond fitness and a healthy lifestyle, I wouldn't follow the personal trainer's advice that does things by the book. I figure most of the people that frequent Elite are different, far from the general population. My wife would say something to this effect "if you want to look or lift like the general population, then train like the general population, and if you want to be different, you better train different". And I'll admit, I wouldn't want some of the physiques I see boasting across the weight room floor with their personal trainer following closely on their heels saying "good job".
