I thought it was BARBELL bench that could f up your shoulders

...in the bb vs. db debate. Am I confused? The reason I ask is...

I've f'd up my shoulder!! In all the time I've been working out, I've done about 95% barbell, 5% dumbell. Yesterday I was gonna do bb as normally, but all the benches were being used, frickin figures. So I say no big deal, and go grab some db's. On my very first set, I don't know if it was the cause or effect of the injury, but one db drifted to the side, and I also think I took it pretty damn low. I did my remaining sets at 20lb less and it still frickin hurt. Now a day later, and it still frickin hurts. Takes me 5 mins to change shirts because it absolutely kills to raise my arm. The woman says my back/arm creases look different (with my arms raised) and thinks I partially dislocated it. Sportscreme and ice have been worthless, it's not a muscle thing, feels very much like a joint thing. What have I most likely done and what can I do about it?

probably funked up your rotator cuffs. I wouldn't rule out bb bench as the culprit, but other things could have had an effect on your injury. behind the neck presses, pulldowns are candidates for fucking up shoulders/rotators. go see a doc. this is a common injury for any sport, and usually isn't completely curable, just suppressed with meds, I believe.

He hurts himself on dbell bench and you would NOT rule out barbell bench as the culprit? That is like saying that I normally do deadlifts but I had to do goodmornings...and hurt my back. Then saying that the deadlifts might be the culprit...

I know...you didn't mean it that way at all...I'm just razzing ya...

Keep your arm still...don't do any lifting with it...relax it. You must learn to strengthen it though. Lots of alleve...ibuprofen...etc...

weight training is one of the safest sports. no exercise if done properly will cause an injury.

people always blame bb benching for screwing up there shoulders, 9 time out of 10 it is there own fault for over training the anterior deltoid with constant pressing movements for chest and shoulders.

I've had all kinds of fucked up injuries, but the only major one from the weight room was my rotator from flat BB. I got up to 405, now I can't even do one plate without serious pain. I only do DBs now.

However, I can BB military 225 for reps and my shoulder is fine:confused:

...and I would say it wasn't the deadlift or the goodmoring, it was your F O R M.

I have f'd up roatators that I work DAILY to rebuild from POOR BENCH FORM. I was stuck at 95 pounds and in wrenching pain until Hannibal corrected my form. Now I'm close to 200 pounds, 12 weeks later. If anything, I have found that the barbell feels better than db's because the db's allow for more instability in the rotation of the joint.

another very common problem the causes injury is AS use. as muscle tensile strength increases at a much faster rate than ligament and tendon tensile strength. if the three do not grow at the same time injury is almost unavoidable even with good form.

Excellent point.

Agreed, when I fucked up my shoulder I was in the fourth week of a fina/test/primo cycle.

My problem is, I push my body 100%. If my body can do it, I will do it. I help out a lot of friends while they're on cycle, and I always tell them to train smart, because they'll have disproportionate strength gains and can end their lifting quick with an easy "ego-injury." But, I fail to listen to myself.

I think it's just that your co-ordination was USED to barbell benches, suddenly changing to another style exercise while throwing in the raw power built by the bench can do an ugly thing like that.

Alternatively this could have happened as well in the case you were a dumbell pressing specialist and suddenly was forced to start with benchpressing a first exercise.....

while I like dumbells a lot, for reasons like this i do them both, usually i start with a benchpress, followed by a dumbell press, after that my pressing power is used up, so it's time to do some heavy dumbell flyes...

Hope your joint will heal soon
