"I heard squats are bad for you"

well they fucked my knees up..but then i think i might've done em wrong.

I tried to get the right technique though.(e.g. dont let your knees go past your feet, dont point your toes too far out).

Now i havnt trained legs for about 6 weeks thanks to squats!

lol.......i 2 have developed an annoying clicking in my knees thanx to squats but theres no doubt they are the ultimate in leg mass.
Despite the click i still do them just making sure i have a walkman on so it doesnt annoy me!!!

Wait...they are bad for you

I have proof:p

I upped my squats to 2x/wk about 2 months ago. I can tell they are bad for me because my quads really swole up. They are about 2" bigger than 2 months ago. I should probably stop now before I cause permenant enlargment:rolleyes:

Someone will always find the perfect excuse not to do the hard stuff! They usually wait long enough to hear the one that sounds the best and then they run with it.

Couldn't say it better!

If bad = big muscle growth than YES, squats are horrible for you. :)

Myself and one of the aerobics instructors are in quite a debate about it right now. He teaches the cardio Kickboxing class. Now when I train people to do squats it is always with seriously low weight especially at first to teach proper form. I do not let them go up in weight until they have the form down no matter what. The aerobics guy still insists that I shouldnt train people in squats becuase it could cause them serious knee injury. I look at him and tell him to video tape his next Kickboxing class. So he does but doesnt know why. I have quite a bit of martial arts background and from the first time I ever saw a Tae Bo tape I thought how many people were gonna destroy their knees with this shit. He has the tape the next day and we watch it. Over 60% of his class was kicking with improper form. Now for those of you who dont understand this. That is far far worse on your knee than just about everything but getting hit with a bat on your kneecap. The possible damage is far worse than anything you would think. Our boss was with us and needless to say he told the guy to fix the problem he had in his class and leave the rest of the trainers alone.

Squating is good for you. Being stupid is bad.

the thing about squats and beginners is that they tend to do them without knowing how much weight to use, or without proper warmups, and like deadlifts, if you do them with bad form, they might hurt your lower back.

Exactly. You get good Karma from the King, LOL!

Seriously...Squats are not bad for you per se, the problem with squats for a lot people (especially newbies) is that perfect form is a must or you can easily get injured. For instance, you can sling around DB's all day doing curls with shitty form and probably not get hurt, but when you start squatting heavy poundages, a minor slip-up in form can royally screw your knees, lower back or even upper back. Also, it's even harder for taller guys to maintain perfect form for obvious leverage and mechanical reasons.

Otherwise, done with the right form...squats are the king of exercises.
