How much protein on cycle?

Typo

New member
I've heard a lot of different opinions on this subject. What do you guys think?
Some people say at least 500g of protein a day when on a bulking cycle, others say 250+ is unnecessary.
I've also heard 1.5-2g per pound of bodyweight or per pound of LBM.

Anyone have a rough idea?

I generally do about 250 - 300 grams. Divided into 30 - 50 grams servings around 7 times a day.

Anyone who says too much protein is unnecessary doesn't get it. Yeah, the body can;t use 300 grams a day but it needs what it needs when it needs it. That's why you should have protein present at all times. It's also one of the concepts behind GEAR. It's instantly available. It's pre digested. And it's fractionated so it disperses throughout the intestines. So you can have aminos available at all times without having to consume thousands of calories.

the truth Nelson! Definitely look to get around 300 or so and try to make the majority of that whole foods & NOT SHAKES. I've read a good bit of research about the digestion times of liquid in an empty stomach(drinking a shake solely for a meal) and the actual amount of time it takes for protein to get absorbed... all in all, that 50g protein shake you drank was mostly wasted on an empty stomach.

oh yeah? what about post workout

Isolate digests a lot faster but some is still wasted. I'm not against drinking protein shakes, but I don't believe in drinking them solely as a meal replacement. I also don't just drink a protein shake post-workout. Here's a article that might strike some interest.

Precision Nutrition

Protein powders are relatively cheap, and just as Nelson said you might as well keep some type of protein available to use by your body as much as possible with real food being the primary source. Your body is going to use what it needs and get rid of the rest, nothing you can do about that.

I'd suggest reading How Much Protein by Brad Pilon, very enlightening. Also there was a study done, which is cited in the book, where men consumed 36 kcal and 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram (which comes out to about .7 grams per pound of body weight) of body weight. After 10 weeks of 600 mg doses of Test E they gained on average 13 lbs of LBM. This would suggest to me that going upwards of 250+ grams wouldn't be very worthwhile since you don't see too many people getting 2 and 3 times the amount of muscle from eating 2-3 times the amount of protein. I could see a upping protein while cutting as protein is more satisfying but I don't think it would lead to much of a difference in muscle mass.

The name of the study is THE EFFECTS OF SUPRAPHYSIOLOGIC DOSES OF TESTOSTERONE ON MUSCLE SIZE AND STRENGTH IN NORMAL MEN.
