Golfing Anyone ?

So after seeing Tiger win the Masters, I am inspired to learn the game of Golf. I figure I would start at the driving range to see how I hit the ball. a friend suggested that i go to the Calloway Preowned site to purchase my clubs.

For the driving range he has suggested the Great Big Bertha:

http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/fwoods-gbb2.html

If i buy a complete set, would the club used for the driving range be included in the set ?

excuse the silly question....but why some many clubs ..I mean do you use all clubs for every game played ?

and he has also suggested that i buy a glove. but when I go onto the site, it talks about 4wood, 5wood and so on. Then it mentions Flex and length. i am thinking i need a standard length, but do i need a regular, firm, strong on stiff flex ?

Also, can you suggest the same for my wife and is there anything else i need to consider.

Thanks !

Go to a descent club that has an onstaff pro. Take the basic course set. Takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks. Depending on scheduling. Then go to a driving range after you get a few lessons in.

Thanks for the reply WODIN !

I will continue to look...but the golf clubs that I have seen so far, are exclusive and I don't get along with pompous schmucks..... or do you mean go to a golf course and ask them ?

I am in the Manhattan and the driving range is in North Jersey, if you have any suggestions for this area.

Whatever you do, don't try to learn the game on your own. Your best bet is to get lessons from a pro from the start, that way you don't develop any nasty habits that you'll have to break. Learn it the right way from the beginning.

Also, since you're just starting I don't think buying the latest and greatest clubs will do you much good (unless you have a ton of cash to spend and don't give a crap). You can get a decent starter set (driver, woods, irons, putter, bag, etc) for a couple hundred bucks that'll work just fine.

I am by no means rich monetarily.....LOLOL

This same friend suggested the X-16 irons. the site says a set for $399. How many clubs are you getting in this set ?

Is this the average price for a set of golf clubs and does this include the club used for the driving iron ?

What is that club for the driving range called anyway ?

I eventually need to learn this sport too. I thought being as good at tennis as Andy Roddick or Serena Williams would get me by in business sports but I guess I have to master golf as well.

what clubs should a beginner get hammy, and what should he pay
i really dont know a good set to recommend, there are a lot of good clubs on the market today, i play pings, which i love, callaways just look like a brick to me when they set up to the ball, a noob to golf may be fine looking down at them since they havent hit other clubs, callaways arent bad clubs at all its just that the top of the irons are much thicker than than irons im used to hitting, they just look too damn weird to me at the set up, and you have to be comfortable and confident when you set up to the ball, which im not with callaways
their drivers are great, i do recommend them

if you are starting out i would definately watch a lot of the golf channel, they have great lessons on there
study the swings of ernie els and luke donald, both very beautiful swings, with great tempo

The best advice I can give you is go take some lessons before you buy a set of sticks. This way you can try some different clubs and see what brand/length/flex you like before you go and spend a bunch of money on a set you don't like.

Next, golf pros, in my experience, tend to be pretty nice guys. These are people who have dedicated thier lives to the game, and most are very good at helping beginners. These guys are the ones that should address your questions simply because they are going to be able to analyze your swing and tell you what is right for you.

I know you wanted me to say "go get a set of Ping I3's (or whatever) they'll make you play the game like Tiger". Unfortunately, this is the most frustrating game on the face of the earth. Trying to learn on your own is nearly impossible. At least that is my expeience. Hope this helps.

sawastea enjoys golf as well. When he was living in Florida, he had a great game and hustled many of the locals. Now that he has moved, his game has gone south. He is going to PA in a few weeks to play a few rounds in the rolling hills and hopes to play more this summer. As a starter set, I thought Yonex had some decent irons, as well as Ping's and Titleist. I too am not a huge fan of the Calloway irons. Currently, am swinging Hogan irons and Calloway woods.

I agree..contact the PGA professional at the range, or at the closest golf course (public courses will also have pros) and see him for an introductory lesson(s). He will have some clubs you can use, then decide what you want to buy, maybe with his help.

I have no idea about north jersey man. Most club / range pros are very nice though and enjoy teaching the game. Just remember to have fun and not to over think your shots. :)

Shit, are you referring to the Korean run Bogota range? I frequent that place every so often. If I meet up with you there, I'll help you out.

I don't know if I have that channel but I'll check. I'm trying to find a good website to read about beginner clubs and everything else for beginners but I keep getting all this advertisement shit when I google

there is no such thing as "beginner clubs"
there is expensive and not as expensive
give me ANY club on the market and i will be able to hit it well (even whatever they would sell at wal mart), some probably a little better than others, but ill play well with any of them, because im a good player and a good striker of the ball
if you have a shitty swing and arent very athletic its not going to matter what clubs you buy, you wont hit any of them good
if you arent sure how into golf you are going to be i wouldnt go out and spend a lot of money on clubs, the golf clubs of today are much better than older clubs, they have bigger heads and are MUCH more forgiving on mishits, you really cant go wrong on any club you buy

ok I mean cheap so I don't F them up when I'm learning. guess I'll just go to wal mart or ebay
I'm pretty athletic I've played sports all my life so hopefully I will be a good 'striker of the ball'

My main Bran was 2 under par, slipped, missed the birdie and flipped.....he screamed "FORE!" and walked off the strip!

3 is VERY impressive. Best I got to was a 6, though I've shot par multiple times and under par a few times. I'm probably closer to 12-15 now since I only play a handful of times a year, if that.

good luck, its the hardest game there is
ill give you a tip, when hitting irons, always hit down on the ball with them
work on your tempo, thats soooooo important, do not try to hit the ball hard, let the club do the work, club head speed is achieved from having good tempo and no tension in your arms

i've been playing for a long time and these would be my suggestions:

1) Definitely take a few lessons from a golf pro at your local course.
2) Buy a set of sticks that is designed for new/bad golfer - (certain sets are designed for spin/distance/etc... you want one that is generous (i.e. to a degree self-correcting) to the hitter.)
3) Spend a considerable time on the driving range and putting green before you play a round.
4) Play your first round on a Par 3/4 (Pitch & Putt) Course. This will emphasize your short/mid irons and putter - which are your bread & butter.
5) Buy a glove and golf shoes so that your hands and feet have a good grip/balance on the sticks and ground.

As far as drivers, oversized heads will lead to more distance in your drives if used properly. Another gimmick you could look for are graphite shafts. As a beginner, i would stay away from the graphite, but the oversized heads are fine.

Be prepared to lose some balls and enjoy yourself.

agree on #4, dont go on a regular course at first, get a feel for it at a par 3 course

klu hit some balls at the range
one ball she hit, hit her left foot after she hit it, another ball went through her legs
a guy was taking practice swings behind her and hit a divot and it went right on her, it was a classic
