Egg White Cartons

Salmonella enteritidis Infection

Egg-associated salmonellosis is an important public health problem in the United States and several European countries. A bacterium, Salmonella enteritidis, can be inside perfectly normal-appearing eggs, and if the eggs are eaten raw or undercooked, the bacterium can cause illness. During the 1980s, illness related to contaminated eggs occurred most frequently in the northeastern United States, but now illness caused by S. enteritidis is increasing in other parts of the country as well. Consumers should be aware of the disease and learn how to minimize the chances of becoming ill.

A person infected with the Salmonella enteritidis bacterium usually has fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated food or beverage. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without antibiotic treatment. However, the diarrhea can be severe, and the person may be ill enough to require hospitalization :toilet: .

The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems may have a more severe illness. In these patients, the infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.
What is the risk?

In affected parts of the United States, we estimate that :toilet: one in 50 average consumers could be exposed to a contaminated egg each year. If that egg is thoroughly cooked, the Salmonella organisms will be destroyed and will not make the person sick. Many dishes made in restaurants or commercial or institutional kitchens, however, are made from pooled eggs. If 500 eggs are pooled, one batch in 20 will be contaminated and everyone who eats eggs from that batch is at risk. A healthy person's risk for infection by Salmonella enteritidis is low, even in the northeastern United States, if individually prepared eggs are properly cooked, or foods are made from pasteurized eggs. :p

You can freeze egg whites you know......... when you get home from the grocery store, separate all your eggs, toss the yolks & freeze in small containers..... Then you don't have to separate them every morning at 5am

I'm a food distributor and i get a case(6 half gallon cartons) of pure egg whites for about $30. The hell with those egg beaters they look and taste like crap. They dont even come close to real eggs.

I'm sure there's been a thread like this just gone on egg whites - but I'll post again.

I live in Western Australia, I go down the road to the local egg wholesalers and buy a box of 6 one litre cartons of egg whites for $22(AUS). Each carton has the equivilent of about 40 egg whites. $3.60 aint too bad for 40 odd eggs! :)

Scope out the local wholesalers, heaps cheaper and like jenscats said you can freeze em well they come frozen but yeah drink up! I have 10 raw egg whites in the morning blended with 100ml milk and two spoons of Milo (do you guys have that in USA?) or some flavour powder and boom, easy as. None of this seperating eggs cr@p hehe
