Just got off the phone with mom. she was filling me in on her visit to the doctors office. the visit went fine for her...
she got to talking with the doctor about creatine, as she has heard me mention it from time to time.
his reply was that he and one of his sons was using it as a part of a regular diet. he said that he made minor changes in his diet and added trendmill in the AM. says he had a few pounds come off over a few months. then he started using creatine daily. 3 months later he loss almost 30 pounds and his son around 22 pounds. he give creatine all the credit.
Does this sound advisible, mom is thinking of trying this and I want to stop her if its going to mess her up of coarse.....

Creatine does not burn fat, that's absurd.

Yes, b.s. They are making it seem as if creatine was solely responsible for losing all that weight.

thats what I thought, but I wanted to hear other opinions on it. why a doctor would come up with this is beyond me.....
 
Oddly enough it may do the exact opposite. I think I've posted a study where one of the conlusions was creatine could *SPARE* fat-mass during caloric restriction



Creatine supplementation influences substrate utilization at rest.

Huso ME, Hampl JS, Johnston CS, Swan PD.

Department of Nutrition, Arizona State University, Mesa, AZ, USA.

The influence of creatine supplementation on substrate utilization during rest was investigated using a double-blind crossover design. Ten active men participated in 12 weeks of weight training and were given creatine and placebo (20 g/d for 4 d, then 2 g/d for 17 d) in two trials separated by a 4-week washout. Body composition, substrate utilization, and strength were assessed following week 2, 5, 9 and 12. Maximal isometric contraction (1-RM) leg press increased significantly (P < 0.05) following both treatments but 1-RM bench press was increased (33 kg +/- 8, P < 0.05) only following creatine. Total body mass increased (1.6 kg +/- 0.5, P < 0.05) after creatine but not after placebo. Significant (P < 0.05) increases in fat-free mass were found following both creatine (1.9 kg +/- 0.8) and placebo (2.2 kg +/- 0.7) supplementation. Fat mass did not change significantly with creatine, but decreased after the placebo trial (-2.4 kg +/- 0.8, P < 0.05). Carbohydrate oxidation was increased by creatine (8.9% +/- 4.0, P < 0.05), while there was a trend for increased RER after creatine supplementation (0.03 +/- 0.01, P = 0.07). Changes in substrate oxidation may influence the inhibition of fat mass loss associated with creatine following weight training.

I see that this study is good in a sense that it shows the fat mass did not change much under weight training,,,,,,
were there any test done or do you know of any test that were conducted the same way but under cardio training. I have seen that some supp companies are marketing creatine just for runners. I guess this would extend into the range of the endurance and energy that creatine is going to give you.
and in the same it would relate more to my first question.
 
creatine increases water retention that would increase weight if anything. its mostly for anaerobic work...since you have a quick source of ATP regeneration...I thought a doctor would know more about biochemistry. Creatine if not used properly can screw up your kidneys (crystalization). There's no point in her using it unless she plans to lift heavy lol.

LOL I don't see her going heavy, like I said I don't know why or how her doctor came up with this. I think I will get his phone# from her and give him a call to see whats up with this whole deal. maybe she misunderstood what he was saying or god forbid he was giving out diet info like this.
 
I'm a little confused by the wording of said study (trying to find it in full) BUT it tested the effects on creatine at REST so that would imply taking it period would have the same effect regardless of cardio or weight training.
