Diet for gaining weight

New member
Hey all need some help in coming up with a diet program for gaining weight I work out 4 time a wk no cardio as yet want to bulk up first stats 27yr 5"6 158pounds 13%bf any help much appreciated

I can't lay out a diet for you but I've always been skinny. 5'11" 135lbs skinny. One thing that helped me to finally pack on a few pounds was tracking the amount of calories I consumed daily instead of just guessing. I use an app on my phone called myfitnesspal. May be a tool that helps others too.

could eat pizza everyday? its what im thinking about atm.
currently ; 5'10 - 172 lbs , 14% BF, cutting down can be done after the mass is there, shredding up you know, on top of a healthy diet, a few pizzas a day could pack it on i heard?

Pizza is shit food, and not for bodybuilders. It will add weight to you but not the right kind. You will just get fat. Pizza is generally low protein, high fat, and high carb. A cheat meal once a week or every other week is ok, but stay the hell away from eating it often unless you plan to look like the rest of obese America

You need high protein and high carb bro. Eat a lot of meats. Chicken, steak fish. Filler up with carbs as well! Sweet potatoes, rice etc!

Eat a diet that's high in lean proteins, high in slow digesting carbs and with moderate fats, and you'll be gaining muscle and strength while keeping your fat gains minimal.

Its will also be useful to you if you find a calorie calculator to give you a rough estimate on how much too eat.

surely though rick, if one wants to pack on size (and i know the mentality of the general population of people) they want size quick, and getting big should be the priority surely? eating a good diet is obv the best way, but its high in cost, time consuming and can be de-motivating IMHO, but eating pizza or burgers will get you fat yes, will put fat on yes, but with fat comes size right?

False. Could not be more untrue.

Especially if one plans on working out. Try hitting the gym 5 days a week when all you eat is garbage. Bet it won't go well. You will lack energy, and your body will be pissed that it's so weighed down.

Another myth...eating healthy is expensive. The most expensive thing I find is produce. Veggies & Fruits can indeed get pricey, but a 10 pack of chicken breasts at my local super market is about $8. That's multiple meals. A box of brown rice is $1-$2. 2 dozen X-Lrg eggs are $3.49. And a huge thing of oats is like $4. Idk about you man, but I eat a TON of food, raise two kids on my own, and we seem to foot the food bill alright.

If you wanna pack on any sustainable weight that won't burn under some cardio, then read the nutrition stickies, find a solid training routine, eat a ton of food, and lift until you can barely crawl to your car. Does eating heavy and lifting heavy take work? Sure does. But this is a game of hard work and dedication.

This is spot on. I use MyFitnessPal too calculate calorie intake. There are no shortcuts, either you do it right or don't bother at all. The app will allow you to scan certain food brands and search for thousands of meals.
You need to be eating no less than 3500 calories a day to bulk up, probably more. It should consist of Protein (roughly 1:2 weight to protein ratio), carbs (good carbs, sweet potato, brown rice, veggies etc) and fat. YES, fat is also very important, but the good types.
It is not easy to get it all in, that is why eating 6-7 times a day is necessary, but regular snacking also keeps your body burning fat. The whole bulking at cutting cycle is bullshit. You can bulk up and not gain fat at the same time.

Good luck, BE PATIENT, persevere....

I wish this was the case for the UK mate, over here, 3 chicken breasts is 5GBP, or 3 packs for 10GBP , veggies and all are cheapish,Eggs are at the cheapest 1GBP for 10 small eggs, but iv learnt that even shopping in the cheapest markets (aldi, lidls) you are looking to spend a lot of money a month if you want to gain weight well

It doesnt cost me under 100$ a week and I'm cutting... It's expensive but well worth it ;) unless you wanna look like the average person

Hey guys I too want to gain weight, I'm 6'1 165 pounds and shredded. I like the cut look but I want to put on weight so I don't look so skinny. I've tried eating as much as I can and have tried many different protein shakes, if anyone can give me advice on what I should be eating that would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Read my above thread link. It's made for me at 4500 cals so if you can manage to put this menu down in one day you'll definitely put on weight! Also try beef cake shake from protein factory. I know I will put meat on your bones!

Thank you! I will definately try this!

Most of us skinny guys "think" we eat a lot. Once you start tracking your calories you'll realize you were probably eating about half the calories you thought you were. I thought I ate a lot and that myfitnesspal app after putting in my stats recommended that I eat just 2390 calories a day to gain. Don't seem like much but believe me at first I had to force food into me just to hit that goal.
Now over 4k a day is no problem.
Use a calorie counter be honest with yourself and only enter what you our in your mouth and swallow. I promise you'll gain. Start out eating anything and slowly tweak your diet to give you the correct %'s of protein, carbs and fat. The app I mentioned is free and os a great tool to help you get that diet in line.

Thank you very much, I just downloaded that app and am excited to get started

I also have another question. I see alot of bodybuilders and athletes cooking their own food, which is something I don't know how to do, is there any types of food that I could eat that doesn't require too much cooking or any places I can go eat out at?

You're pretty screwed on that one bro lol most foods cooked in fast food are full of shit. Everything on my foods list requires cooking, baking ect.... You need to learn to cook bro, cheaper and healthier than eating out.

Steak, chicken, fish and veggies are available at most every restaurant. With some effort and self control on your part you can eat mostly clean. Its just going to be more costly.

Cooking the foods we eat isn't hard. Just cook as much as possible ahead of time. Im making food tonight for the next 2 days. All I have to do is turn on my grill throw 3lbs of meat on it, boil some brown rice, and steam a bunch of green beans on the stove. This will get me 3 meals a day for the next 2 days so I only have to cook 2 more a day and that's eggs for me so that takes 5 minutes to cook

Cooking isn't hard, watch a few videos on how to properly use a knife, clean produce/meat.

Don't try frying with olive oil cuz it smokes, low heat for olive oil.
Things like onions, garlic, salt, fresh pepper n some herbs go a long way in flavoring food- try to make stirfrys- they are a great way to get in calories, are very versatile and taste great.

Also on the pizza topic, MAKE YOUR OWN.
The trader joes by me sells whole wheat pizza dough that makes a medium sized pizza for a little over a dollar. Buy some tomato sauce that you like, some low fat or full fat natural cheese (not the processed crap), and grill up some chicken, or sautée some ground beef, and veggies and boom! A lot of carbs, protein, and fats.

Veggies include spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, (maybe broccoli?)
Go cheddar cheese if you go the ground beef route- like a take on a philly cheesesteak.

If you're a real hard gainer I would eat as healthy as possible during the day and then when the clock is running out before bed I cram "junk food". I've heard it referred to as a "dirty bulk". Only hard gainers really can get away with it. Look, I know it isnt ideal bodybuilding food but when it comes down to it, you need to get as many calories as possible, and because (for me at least) its hard to keep eating when you might not be that hungry, it helps to eat something delicious like pizza ( or my favorite something sweet chased with a ton of milk). Again, if you're metabolism is anything like mine, pizza won't make you fat. In fact I just ate a half of one from costco this afternoon.

Include more protein foods to improve your weight and muscles.
The foods that can increase your weight and muscles are:
Milk, yogurt, cheese, meat, eggs, banana, roots beat, potatoes, rice, and sweets.
