I love to train the olympic lifts but I also train for fun and not competition. Technique is huge in these lifts but they do build unbelievable explosion (sort of like training your engine to redline as fast as possible).
Bill Starr's article on cleans related to increasing the deadlift without deadlifting. Everybody thinks that means that no one should deadlift to train the deadlift as it is too taxing. If you've ever seen the suggested regimen you would realize that you do so much frickin' pulling from the floor on multiple days per week that you are probably better off just doing the damn deadlift anyway. FYI - The core of the whole workout was the high pulls with lots of assistance work.
