Carbs?

This is probably going to sound reallly dumb....and I almost don't want to ask it........

Are their carbs in veggies? I always thought there were. But I've been doing reading on Keto, and I've noticed that people eat a lot of veggies on that diet. I though keto was more protein & fats, with little carbs? Or is it just the grainy carbs that you don't really eat on keto?

Again, I'm sorry if I sound dumb.....can someone enlighten me?

Thanks!

There are carbs in veggies. You can look up the amount of carbs for a specific vegetable at fitday.com. The calories and carbs are so low in some veggies that people do not always count them.

There is this thought that you count the active carbs which is the total carbs minus the fiber to get the carbs that you would count in a keto diet.

A carb is a carb IMO I stick to mostly spinach or mixed green and just small amount more fibrous green veggies total carbs should be less then 30 per day when following a keto diet.

It would make counting carbs far easier doing it this way, and I have counted all the carbs in veggies before.

I am considering using the fiber method as I have heard that the carbs in cocoa don't count as it is mostly fiber (can you tell where my motivation comes from, YUM, cocoa and cacoa nibs  )

I think finding a method that works for you and sticking to it is probably the best idea.

I would assert though that a carb is not a carb is not a carb.

Carbohydrate biochemistry is quite complicated, and they are not all created equally, just as all fats are not the same, and there is also benefit in getting your protein from different sources.

Simple, refined carbs are to be avoided with the exception of post workout (unless you are keto dieting), timed ketogenic diets would include carbs post workout.

There are a number of fibrous veggies that can be eaten during a keto diet, and I do think that eating a wide variety of foods, especially veg, is always beneficial to health, well-being and your physique.

I do think that Atkins has a lot to answer to for having people become completely carb-o-phobic.

A carb is a carb. So a simple carb is the same as a complex carb. Sucking back a pixy stick is the same as eating a sweat potato. Fuck this is a medical brake threw. Thank you so much.

I am talking about a low carb competition diet here. I am pretty sure you have little experience with that. For any type of keto diet to really work you have to have next to nothing in carbs that means limiting even green veggies. Next time you care to question my knowledge on competition dieting post a pic of your six pack with vains running through it. I get my knowledge from experience not from cutting and pasting ripping off other people work.

In off season carbs are need but from my experience they have next to no place in a competition diet. Last time I checked bodybuilding was about the end result of how you look not overall health. I am not talking about following atkins here that is a crock people bought into that the same crock that the net carbs theory comes from.

A carb is a carb is a carb true... however, the WAY the body breaks down and absorbs them is NOT the same.

I am glad that the poster asked the question. There is so much misinformation out there and so little understanding. Once people gain a better understanding of very basic biological functions they will better be able to take control of their bodies, not just for competition, but for living day to day. :)

Carbs can work in a competition diet. They may not work for everyone, but they do work for some.

I have a copy of the pre-comp bible, and it is quite interesting to see the different comp preps of a lot of the pros, and a lot of them ate carbs as well.

As a natural bodybuilder, both myself and my coach do work towards not only having the look, but having it be functional/healthy as well.

I think it is possible to have the best of both worlds.

I think if you mean net carbs with the odd polyols, innulin etc, yes, then it is a crock, however, humans do not have the digestive enzymes to break down lecithin, which is what cell wall membranes are composed of (considered fiber), so we would not be able to access the full carbs in fibrous veggies.
