carbs at night myth?

STEP OFF

New member
not worried about it too much right now, cus I am bulking, but when I do cut I was wondering if the following statement is fact or myth:

Eating carbs a few hours before sleeping will cause you to retain much of it as fat.

I've heard that for almost my entire BB life, but never saw any evidence suggesting it was real. Just wondering if it's true or not.

to be quite honest, as long as im training hard, it doesnt really make much difference to me whether i eat carbs at night or not, as long as i keep it roughly 40% or less of my overall daily calories

Hell, people who are advocates of low fat high carb diets say to avoid fat at all costs and eat carbs before bed :-/. Personally I say go for something that is rich in protein but thats just me. :-o

I'd rather avoid an insulin spike before bed.

Some people maintain that the body becomes slightly less insulin sensitive as the day wears on...but unless you're a couch potato who never works out, I doubt this will have much overall significance on keeping bodyfat down.

The ultimate deciding factor will be whether or not you're consistently eating below maintenance calories.

Having said that, I prefer a meal of protein and fat before bedtime - and it's only because of the sustained release of aminos that such a meal provides - it's not because I believe that carbs will magically be stored as fat if eaten late at night.

Bottom line IMHO is that if you have a daily caloric deficit, and you're making wise carb choices, it's not going to matter that much when you consume your carbs.
