Are protein shakes really healthy?

I am currently using Isopure protein powder. Curently I am taking in 50grams of the powder (2 scoops - serving).

My question is, if I upped the amount to two servings for 100g of protein or even four servings of 200g's, is this too much in protein shakes?

The reason why I ask is I take in very little protein each day but I really want to build muscle.

Also, is it ,dare I say, easy to build muscle when you take way more that your body requires. For example, I am 179, if take in 200 grams of protein per day with a good routine, would I actually build muscle faster.

try to take in more substantial foods, such as beef and eggs, for your protein. shakes are great for a drink at lunch and before bed, but u dont want all yer protein to come from shakes. if its all from shakes, then your not getting enough calories. if u really want to build muscle, youll eat more. if you dont think u have time, make time. wake up earlier to eat, precook your lunch so u have it at work if u do work. take time at night to cook a healthy dinner. and no more midnight junkfood binges :)

Depends on your definition of "healthy"

there is nothing wrong w/ shakes but real food is always better (except for post WO)

Try comining protein powder with your favorite foods. For my first meal I mix 1.5 sccops protein powder, 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 cup frozen bluberries, 1/2 cup raw oatmeal, and 10 grams of creatine.

Protein powder is a SUPPLEMENT and should thus be treated as such, and not your main source of protein. They are a quick, transportable, low-calorie, easily-digestable way to add some extra protein into your diet. Eating natural foods as much as possible is always a better idea. There are plenty of other easy protein sources--cottage cheese, tuna, etc.

That being said, I wouldn't go with more than two shakes a day.

i was on 6 shakes a day until i found that getting your protein requirement is not that difficult. i need 200g a day i get this from

pint of milk 20g
can of tuna 35g
protein shakes 70g
beef or chicken 60g
cottage cheese 35g or peanut butter 20g

i might even go beyond 200g of protein some times.
if you remember to east every hour and the food is available. theres no problems if you think you cannot eat that much protein theres really no safe alternative. just remind yourself why you want to gain muscle and you should encourage yourself to eat the food.

ive been doing this for a year and yes it sucks but im getting results.

Great replies. Yeah, I think I will pass on using protein shakes as my main source of protein.

Another question that I have is, is it (dare I say) easy to build muscle when your body has enough or more protein that necessary.

I have to disagree on that protein shakes shouldnt be your main source of protein. I grow better when I get at least half my protein from shakes. It is all about digestion. You can not tell me that your going to get enough of that red meat to digest fast enough to get into the bloodstream in the time frame needed. Try getting 300 grams protein digested in solid food a day. Fat chance.
