Any lower back training not involving hamstrings?

Injured my right hamstring. I'll probably have to spent months on rehab. The hamstring injury seems to prevent me from doing any sort of light lower back work. This is very bad because I need to exercise my lower back lightly to stay clear of groin and sciatic pain.

The standard hyperextension device in the gym is definitely a no go. Puts to much strain on the hamstring.

So my question are:
Which exercise do you consider most qualified to be the first? (rehab/endurance).
In general knees bent or straight while performing lower back exercise to keep the stress off?
Legs spread or held together? (floor hyperextensions)
Should feet and lower legs be rotated inwards/outwards to deactivate hamstrings? Or does it not matter?
Should I consider the exercise ball?
Elevate part of my body?

It really puzzles me how the hamstring seems to engage with the slightest lower back activity. Any help appreciated.

This is definitely one for the physical therapist. If you haven't been scheduled for an appointment, make one now.
