Owls present challenges for Pirates, coach Skip Holtz

East Carolina Pirates have the Rice Owls in their rearview mirror in the USA standings. A win Saturday will keep them there.

Rice takes its 0-3 mark to East Carolina to tackle the 1-3 Pirates.

The Pirates (3-1 ATS) opened as 5.5-point favorites and they host an Owls team that has covered 0 of their 3 games this season.

Rice's defence was shredded for 45 points last game by the Blazers attack and they need a superior effort from that defensive unit this week or the opening total could be eclipsed by halftime.

East Carolina looks to get its offence in gear this week, after a lame display last game resulted in a 33-7 lost to the Golden Eagles. The Pirates were underdogs in that game.

The Owls need some production from their passing game. They rank 118th in the league, averaging 86.7 yards per game through the air. The receivers need to make some plays this week.

Some trends to consider:
Rice is 1-6-0 ATS in their last 7 lined games
Rice is 1-4-0 ATS in their last 5 away lined games
Rice is 1-4-0 SU in their last 5 games after scoring 21 to 30 points
East Carolina is 4-2-0 ATS in their last 6 lined games
East Carolina is 1-5-0 SU in their last 6 games after scoring less than 10 points
