I agree, you will gain more benifit from a thicker handle.

you would be surprised how many places give away perfect materials. curtain shops dont have much use for 1 1/2 feet of excess curtain rod (the thick ones).

some plumbing supply, or pool shops throw away certain lengths of pipe
 
Cool, I'll try wrapping it with duct tape or something to make it a bit thicker. It's 1.5 inches now. What would you suggest - 2?
 
I just made a pinch block with some leftover 2x4 and some rope, and lots of duct tape. It works pretty well, and it was cheap. :)

if it were me i would go 2-3 inchs. mine is 3.

i would get a new pipe
