when does the majority of muscle recovery occur?

So when DOES the majority of muscle recovery typically occur- within so many hours after workout, after so many hours/days, ... ???

I'm trying a zig-zag diet thing at the moment, trying to hinder gains as least as possible but also trying to shed some of the chub I've put on while bulking recently. So I guess I'm just in the process of reevaluating my current plan to eat big on workout days and go totally low carb/low fat/high protein on off days. Or would it be better to keep a "normal" calorie intake on off days? Or just intake moderately high calorie levels every day and just try to keep it as clean as possible?

for reference, my workout schedule during this phase has been M/F upper body which is what I've been focused on building the most, and W core/legs which I bascially just do for strength and burning calories. M/F are eat big days, the rest are maintenance protein/supp levels and under maintenance overall calories.

any ideas?

ideas?

stop over-analyzing that crap. hit the gym. run 1-5 miles a day. sweat your ass off. do weight training and keep increasing weights. oh, and just eat healthy.

dieting isn't rocket science. people have been doing it for thousands of years.

you people and your oatmeals and chicken breasts and precise measurements and 10 mins of cardio a day crack me up.

ever seen the diet of most 18 y/o's??? :)

And it's their diets at 18 years old that leave them fat as shit in 5 years. While dieting may not be rocket science it sure is a hell of a lot more complex then you give it credit for in the above post.

Some people's bodies are more prone to fat loss on a more 'perfect' diet than others. If you can get down to 8% bodyfat on pizza and burgers then thank god for good genetics :x

But anways..regarding the muscle recovery. Here is what I've always thought - which may not be entirely correct as I haven't read very many studies on it.

Muscle recovery begins within 30 minutes of a workout (that is why its important to get the pwo shake) and will continue for a period of 1-5 days..

Razor is my new healthy eating hero.

I have never counted or measured anything food related ever.
It's basically a good guess as to eating healthy. By not eating a crap load if any sugary foods or simple starches, but you can have a small amount and not fail.

Know the types of foods that are healthy in general and eat a lot of them,
Know those that are not healthy for you in general and eat few of them.

I would think that a lot of Muscle recovery happens while you are sleeping.
Hence the fact that people who don't get enough rest don't generally grow as well,
all things being equal

Ever been to boot camp?

you run all day long. bust your ass. your diet is so-so. not full of chicken breasts, oatmeal, flax seed and salads - but not pizza and hamburgers either. somewhre in between.

and 9 weeks later - recruits lose tons of weight.

now spread that over 52 weeks.

bust your ass every night. finish drenched in sweat. 1 year guarantee you'll be way more buff and jacked. and u can still eat most things u enjoy - as long as u watch the calories.

i'd kill myself if i was forced to eat a boring ass yucky diet of salads, water and chicken breasts.

i had spaghetti and meatballs today. guess i'm gonna gain 10lbs tomorrow :)

I always thought that the "most"muscle recovery happens well you sleep.hence why sleep is so important.

People can learn a lot from NeedTo. Your body is only given the chance to repair and heal itself when it is asleep. That's why they say get 8 hours a night.

right...sleep is when the body dose its best work. :)

Yep I would have to agree that your body goes into its highest recovery state during sleep. I enjoy a few spoonfulls of peanut butter before i go to bed.

Razorguns I also think you need to give dieting a little more credit. Nobody is really saying that if you dont diet that you will become obese and bedbound weighing in at 500lbs and needing surgery or on the verge of death.

For instance when you are just beginning to workout yeh you shouldnt worry so much about the diet but you should worry about adequate sleep and the proper mechanics to avoid injury as much as possible while in the gym. Later on when things get more demanding is when diet really becomes crucial whether it be competition diet or just very healthy.

A healthy diet with good amounts of sleep means you will become stronger and grow faster than someone who trains hard and just eats pure crap and could care less. Dieting isnt for everyone but deserves more credit than you give it bro.
