TRICEPS: do we really need overhead?

In an old interview with dorian yates, he states that when doing lying barbell or dumbell franch presses you really don't need to do seated overhead barbell or dumbell french presses after that, also the lying french allows better torso stabillity and more weight to be used than the overhead french press.

Yates says we better focus on a big lying skull crusher, skip the overhead work and do some dips or csable kickbacks etc. after that.

I feel he is right, what do you think?

I never do overhead triceps movements. I feel that they put my shoulder in a bad position. I like movements where I can use a lot of weight to hit the given muscle, and for me, close grip bench, JM Press, 5 board press, skullcrushers, are all good barbell exercises for triceps development. For dumbells, I like Tate Presses, and dumbell tricep extensions lying on a bench or the floor.

Kickbacks are about as worthless at tits on a catfish, but triceps pressdowns are ok to throw in, but I would not make them a staple of my workouts.

It sounds like common sense it seems pointless to do lying french presses then seated french presses its the same exercise. Thats like doing seated db curls and standing db curls in the same workout.

i have heard that when doing lying barbell french extensions on a flat bench it works the lateral head, though when you do them on the decline bench it works all three heads, is this true??

yes, unless you do your skullcrushers by putting the long head in a slight stretch.

the closer you get to your sides with your arms (shoulder extension) the more the lateral and medial head take over or have a stronger advantage. since the long head originates up in the shoulder, it doesnt have sufficient stretch to contract unless it is slightly stretched. thats why people "feel" dbell pullovers in their triceps.
