Let's all tell about our own experience with Melatonin !

I have used melatonin for jet lag and it really helped

On the other hand, for insomnia, I have had mixed results

At more than 1 mg (from 1 to 6mg) it doesn't seem to help me fall to sleep and sleep well

At very low dosage (less than 0.5mg) it is quite effective: though it doesn't make fall asleep sooner I don't feel tired the next morning
 
3mg to 9mg knocks me out and gives me strange-ass dreams. More than 12mg, and I can't fall asleep, yet seem to hallucinate.
Never tried less than 3mg.
 
I take 3 mg every now and then if I feel i won't be able to fall asleep.

I tried taking 6 mg one time - slept for about 8 hours but when I woke up I was pretty groggy for a while, didn't like it so I'll stick to 3mg from now on.


I also take valerian root.
 
I use it five days a week, don't use it on Friday and Saturday. I take a week off here and then. It is true that if you use it everyday for a long period of time your body will stop producing it. That is why I only use it five days, and take a week off every two months or so.
 
yes temporarily. Eventually your body reaches the required amount, but if you supplement it long enough, it will take awhile for your body to get back to it's natural level.
