Mass is not always detrimental for endurance athletes. If you train for endurance; core, primary muscles used for your sport, you increase output and protect bones/tendons.
If I were already massive to the point where it would slow me down I could see your point. IOW it is relative. I predict from reviewing past logs that my sweet spot in regards to weight will be another 10-15 useful pounds to be at my prime.
