Depends more on training program, genetics, and diet than anything else.

okay, say the person's genetics are average to good and their diet is ideal..would say, the westside-type workouts be better for size than a periodization-type program?
 
Yes. A periodization program has a hypertrophy phase, where the most mass will be gained, then as the volume drops, there is less ability to gain mass.

I have gained quite a bit of size using WS, and so have quite a few others on this board.

If you really need to train the beach muscles, you can always add them in.

Dude-I know what you mean about lower bakc soreness. One thing i have found is bent over sled pulling. If you dont have a sled, make one out of an old tire or thick duffel bag. Try doing it the night after your lower back and leg work. It will hurt, but helps greatly with the soreness and speeds up the recoup. Also use an ice pack after your workout. Ice is a great recovery tool(not just for injuries). Hope this helps!
