Pushups

Hey Chicas,
How many Military style pushups can you do?
Why do I always see in fitness shows (like Co-Ed) the females their knees? Are they that hard, they are supposed to be in tiptop shape?
Bye.

I've seen video of min yung kim doing one-handed pushups at a show; I can't do those, but I usually do 20-30 pushups every morning along with various other exercises (pullups, crunches, etc.) before going to work. I don't know how many I can do at max, though. That's just to get the blood flowing and the metabolism going, since I tend to get my real workouts in the evening. These are military style pushups, slow and steady, not girly ones.

I once asked about so-called "women's pushpus" on a martial arts mailing list. I'd heard conflicting things about women doing full military style pushups. The general consensus among the instructors on this list was that full pushups are only a bad idea for women if they are pregnant at the time. Not otherwise - you can go ahead and do pushups to your heart's content unless thre's a kiddo in there.

One reason many non-BB women still do them on their knees and are encouraged to do so is that without a certain amount of upper-body strength, it's very dificult to do them with proper form. In my case, I have to do them on my knees or I compromise my form and strain my lower back. Once I build up muscle though, I should be OK for full pushups. THe other reason is that without aforementioned strength, doing full pushups QUICKLY in a martial arts class where the instructor says "drop and gimme 30" is next to impossible - and the whole class has to wait in pushup position until everyone is finished. Even some of the guys do them on their knees in that situation... BTW, I know doing them ultra-fast is a waste of time, try telling most instructors that though....

i know a girl who can do about 30 single handed full range pushups and she doesn`t even workout. i dont understand at all

I never train for muscular endurance. I get bored after 12 - 14 reps & it never did anything for my physique anyway.

I almost always do push-ups as part of my chest routine, I think they are a GREAT exercise. I could probably do at least 20 military style, so in order to fail in the 8-12 rep range (as I always do) I do decline (feet on a stability ball or bench) & have my training partner put a weight on my upper back. Usually 10 lb weight & I fail in about 10 reps - but this is always after 4 sets of bench - sometimes it's the 3rd exercise in the routine.

One must posess a certain degree of strength to do military push-ups with good form (core strength in abs & lower back to stop your lower back from arching/ hips sagging, as well as chest, shoulders, & tris), but I think anyone who works out with some frequency probably has that level. They are great for working on kinestetic awareness & posture - benefits you don't get from laying down on your back pushing a bar up.

I want to know what is the average amout of pushups girls who train can do. Since you are so into fitness/bodybuilding I think this is the place to ask.
It a crude measurement, but Pushups do incorporate many muscle groups.
10x.
Bye.

...and we're telling you we don't know.
Yup. I don't think it was a bad question to ask, I just have never tested my rep max, nor do I plan to (b/c I don't ever do muscular endurance training).
I bet you might be able to find some stats on some fitness or personal training web sites.

Although now that I think about it, I can tell you that any data you could find regarding the "AVERAGE" girl will not be very worthwhile data - because the "average" girl does push-ups with HORRIBLE form. I know this b/c as a group fitness instructor, I cue on & on & on about body positioning & WHY etc., but they still have all sorts of ATROCIOUS form! :(

I have never really cared to find the answer to this question as I lack the proper urinary tract (I guess it is kind of akin to the question, "How much can you bench?") but I am not opposed to trying to answer it.

Often times after my last set (usually fourth) of dumbbell presses I like to go for a good burn and do a set of push-ups with proper form. I usually have no difficulty getting to between 10 to 12 reps. If I could do more than that, I would think that I didn't train heavily enough with the dumbbells.
