Hey guys this is my first post and my first actual attempt at working out, i used out alot and i was starting to gain weight and look slightly decent however i had surgery in the sr year of highschool and havent hit the gym since(now im a sophmore in college). Im 19 years old, 6'4, and wigh all of 160 lbs...i know pathetic. My main concern here is where can i do research on what to eat or how to train. I like to think i have enough drive to go to the gym once i know it wont just be a waste of time or effort, i feel like if im eating wrong yet working out theres no real point in doing it. If im not mistaken this age is ideal to make gains and i would love to take full advantage of any advice or help you guys can offer. Also not only diet ( i know this is the diet section) but a routine i can begin looking at and how to calculate which weights to use and how many reps. i know this is all basic stuff but again im new to the world of lifting so thanks again for your help.

chris, im headed to the gym right now. First of all, don't think anything about you is pathetic, pathetic is the guys who are not willing to make a change, who just want to sit on the couch and eat...so youre making a big step. I have to head the gym right now, but if nobody has given you detailed responses when I'm back, i'll point you in the right direction for everything.

I'm new to training properly world and the routine I'm using to introduce me to the big compound lifts is Bill Star's 5x5 Routine. Simple, basic, and just three days a week. It's really helped me get used to the big lifts and get comfortable with my form.

I noticed your in college, I was only in college for 2 and a half years and I always struggled with money for food and you're probably looking to bulk. Any budget problems you have to work around or can you spend a little bit on food?

Yeah im in college but i have like $60.00 a week i can spend on food i mean i can budget myself accordingly sortof. maybe not the best foods but at least something healthy with a few of the essentials you know. Where did you find the info for the bill starr 5x5 program i read the thread on it and stuff but i cant find where it actually tells you what to do or how to do it all it says is for beginners read the book, is there any other advice that can be given with out the book as to how to figure out how much weight you should be lifting or anything to that effect?

That is the routine for 5x5, as for the weight calculation that is something you'll have to learn. I spent about 2 weeks learning what weights I should be working with awhile back before I started the program.

I have a real simple diet plan, gives me my 40/30/30 ratio and is roughly 2400 calories. http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6819869&postcount=38

That is a link to the post about the diet I am doing, no one has replied to what they think of it but I really don't see anything wrong with it. I'm new to it myself but it may help you out since not much needs to be cooked, just the chicken and I do that every 4 days. I eat the oats raw so only thing I cook is chicken.
