Hey everyone, I remember clint posting he needed help deciding what weights to use for his overhead press the last few weeks before his competition and you all gave great responses.

The event is thick bar clean and press with 125lbs

I'd like to get 12+ reps with it

Last week I did 135x8 reps full gear

This week I did seated paused military press 95x5,115x5,145x5 standing military press 115x10
(I used a different bar...its a little lighter but i counted it as 45lbs)

I need to know what kind of weight to use for the next 2 weeks on overhead press to ensure my best performance at the contest. I need to be DOING the actual overhead press these 2 weeks though because I have to practice form.

the 3rd week I will be doing a very light workout of maybe just bands.

Would it make sense to add lots of volume the next 2 weeks since I will be basically taking the 3rd week off?

I would really like everyones opinion here...the more the better

thanks in advance

here is what i did........ i did some speed work for ohp, then i did a set with my weight, then i did one with a heavier weight. like 1 timed set with 130 ( my weight). then 1 set with 165..... 35 lbs more. and im glad i did, becuase they changed our weight to 175lbs........ so i becareful, remember the entry form says events are subject to change with no notice.

T3c,

I would think that doing seated presses first wouldn't be a good idea. I would try to stand as much as possible. If I know B-fold (trust me I do) (though you never know about the wily B-fold) you will be allowed to jerk/push press the weight. To do this most effectively, it requires practice. IF anything, I would save the seated presses till the end of the workout. By doing this, it allows you to focus on the technique. Strongman isn't necessarily about being the Strongest (thought it helps). It's a lot about using your strenght the best. I hope this helps.

Ps What is full gear?

ZGzaa,

I started posting here last week sometime. I am living in New Orleans for the moment. I don't have B-fold to post stuff for me and it was high time I joined all you cool cats! So, I here I am.

Vary your weights...a lot. You will be surprised how a 2" thick bar feels!!! It makes a difference.

I feel confident I can clean and press 300+ on a 2" bar but I could only get 200 x 1 on a 3" bar last night. I could only pull 211 up to about waist height...couldn't clean it.

Practice against the clock too!!!!! VERY important!!!

Cheese is a wise man...

My best advice for the overhead is LEARN TO JERK. I have no idea what my standing BB military press is (which means it probably isn't good)... but can still manage to knock out a few reps on the log by utilizing the jerk.

Train the shoulder press hard... but learn to jerk as well, especially if you want to be knocking out as many reps as possible.
