Alright people, everybody add what they think people should know before they compete:
  1. 1:Know your goals and stick to them
  2. 2:Have all your gear ordered with your meet weight in mind
  3. 3:Have your gear at least 3 weeks before the meet
  4. 4:First attepts are to get in the meet
  5. 5:second attempts are for a pr then total
  6. 6:third attempts are for all out attempts 'wish list' or to assure a pr
  7. 7: Don't change your plans at the meet stick to what you think you CAN do.
  8. 8:Know the rules of the federation and adjust early to them in training.
    [/list=1]

I like all of these but I think that you need to have a back up plan. Say for example, what happened to me last weekend. I missed my opening squat due to depth, the weight was easy, btu I was an idiot. Instead of taking the same weight I bumped it up -- only 20 lbs. Missing my openeing squat really killed my total. But I had a back upplan in that case. You are right -- 3rd's are wish lists. I can't think of the last time I hit a 3rd attempt pull.

pack your gear at least two nights before, have a checklist, and check it at least 3 times before leaving. it is inevitable you will probably forget something if you wait till the last minute.

bring backups that have been tried in training (e.g. bench shirts, just in case one blows)

if you are crossing the border of the US, for god sakes hide your other gear well or leave it at home. i saw some really stupid shit people did the last time i went to canada. several lifters got sent home. i couldn't help myself but to think "if you havent prepared properly in training, 2 days of boatloading goodies is not going to help you"

I would have to say that the opening attempt to get in or stay in the meet is by far the most important. Shit, at IPA the other week out of the 308 and SHW half from each bombed out and they combined them for the deads because there were only like 10 left out of like 30.

Knowing your equipment and what you can get down in it helps as well.
