Ketosis & calories?

Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this for me. We always seem to be caught up with counting calories while in ketosis, however Dr Atkins seems to feel that calories are irrelivant when in deep ketosis, that cutting calories only leads to lose of muscle without guaranteeing any lose of additional body fat. The man has personally observed and run trials on countless people, with fantastic results, so is there any possibility of him being correct? I've personally observed a friend of my dad's do this. I was around him for an entire day, and I bet he ate over 4000 cals (well over 70% of it fat, mostly sausage the kind that has over 2 grams of fat per gram of protien, whole eggs and brisket). I would have to say his breakdown was about 75-80% fat, 20-25% protein, and less than 15 grams of carbs a day. He has already lost 40 ibs, and was still losing fat eating this many calories. He went from 260 to about 190 in 8 months before he stopped the diet, and even now he goes back on it when he gets to about 210. Now, we are talking about a guy who does not workout, and did not change his activity level signifigantly. If one's body is excreting larges amounts of ketos in one's feces & urine, aren't you simply expelling a large amount of unburned fat calories? I also spoke with a bodybuilder on here some time back who said the he never counts calories when in ketosis, he simply minimize carbs, and tries to get 2 grams of fat per gram of protien. So what's the real scoop here?

I usually go with 12 or 13 cal per lb of BW. I dont think that it is possible to get super ripped without watching your calories somewhat. I bet that your dads freind was a major fatty. When your are seriously out of shape just the change in diet is a major shock to your metabolism and you will lose weight. But, I believe to get ripped (4 or 5% BF ) most people have to be very detailed in their diets. I do agree with Atkins though that reducing your calories too much will result in muscle wasting and slow your metabolism. I believe the best way is just to monitor what you eat and see what works for you.

Good Luck,

P

being in ketosis does not change the fact that consumed calories must be less than burned calories in order to lose weight. I think the biggest factor that makes people lean towards thinking that you can eat as much fat as you want in a ketogenic diet, is that you are not really holding any water while on a ketogenic diet, and this plays a really big role in how your body looks and the weight on the scale. If you eat 12,000 calories of fat while in ketosis, you are going to gain weight, ketosis or not about 3500 calories is equal to one pound of body weight.

Another factor is that fat is very filling, and you have to eat a lot of fat on a ketogenic diet, so you may feel that you are 'over eating' since you may feel full throughout the day from the fat that you are eating while still having to consume more fat to reach your diet ratios for a given day.

yeah...i find it pretty hard to overeat on a keto diet.....sometimes tough to get enough calories even......because of the full feeling....

I mean when you think about how many calories you are taking in by drinking fruit juice, or soda....all that goes out the window on a keto, so calories have to come from solid food...it's hard to eat all that food.

i would also think that some of those calories that your body can't process at the time simply get passed through the system unused.

I think those extra calories your body can't process get 'stuck' in the system, which is why the fiber on a keto diet is oh so important :D
