Jerking Movements versus Smooth Pulls

Alright, get you minds out of the gutters kids...

Whenever I see video of a pro working out, he always has a jerky movement. The best example I can think of right now would be bent over rows. It seems they use a lot of body english to move the bar, whereas I try to stay perfectly still.

The other exercise that comes to mind is dumbbell lateral raises. Again, I see the advanced guys using a lot of weight but also some body english.

Is some body english okay?

Kind of pointless -- it's like doing an explosive partial but throwing in a whole bunch of momentum to injure yourself with. I would guess it's an ego thing for those bodybuilders who do it.

I think the less upper body movement, the better, especially for bent rows. You're just begging for an injury there.

And yeah, I've seen guys who are bigger and in much better shape than I, do that little dip motion at the top of a lat raise. Doesn't make any differenct to me however, bad form is bad form.

I'm one of the bigger guys in my gym, but I don't lift as much weight as many of the guys my size because I don't slack on form. So I'd say to keep doing what you're doing. It will benefit you in the long run.

Just as an adendum here to cover my ass, I also think that it's ok to sacrifice some form to get the last couple reps of a heavy set up. For example, if you have to arch your back a little on the last rep of a heavy bench set, I think that's ok.

Usually, for every set of rows that I slightly cheated on...I did 2-3 sets that were absolutely perfect. I don't/didn't cheat on bench, squat, or dead though.

I would slightly cheat on rows, laterals, and curls sometimes...

I saw some big guy today shrugging 495, but he was also just bouncing it... I don't get it, I'm happy w/ shrugging my 315 nice and slow... But I'm looking at this guy, and wondering how he got that big w/ working out like I see him do...

So, jerky/bouncing on shrugs to get more weight... or less weight w/ better form???

another exersize I see people cheat a bunch on is curls... instead of doing preacher, or spider curls, guys will stand up, put on a bunch of weight, and use a bunch of back!
