Have you tried Old Navy?? I found a pair there that are stretch & actually fit my thighs....... I always have the waistband thing, but have never bothered to have them altered.....
I hate trying on clothes. Trying on jeans and bathing suits are both on the very low end of things I enjoy doing.
Men's Levi 501's are the closest thing I can get to fitting right, but they don't quite make it. Victoria's Secret makes a great style called the weekend jean (straight wide legs) - but I'd like something a little more form fitting.
I don't have an old navy or an AE outfitters near me. I do have the Gap and a Dillards at my disposal.
I have ordered from them (since I'm overseas right now) and have yet to have to exchange a pair. VERY rare for me as it usually takes 4 try ons before I even like anything...The "favorite" jeans have a more relaxed fit and the "ultra low stretch" are more form fitting. Try the hipster...just my 2cents

My best friend has this problem also and she has tried EVERYTHING... I cannot make any suggestions but can relate to the frustration. I often get the gap in the waist by my butt. I cannot tell you the last time I bought jeans though. lol
those are the jeans that actually fit horrible on me (the waist issue)
Basically if I find a pair that fit incredible and cost $160, I will buy em and wear em until they are about to fall apart, there's always patches for the holes they accumulate
