Is Overtraining a Myth? Lets Discuss

My new gym is hardcore I mean really good size dudes that are definetely strong. I have been watching the owner and some of his partners workout out lately. And I have noticed when they do bi's they whack'em hard. I mean like 5 to 6 different exercises 3 or 4 sets each. And they are getting bigger and stronger.

So I am wondering if people say to do only like 9 total sets of bi's are full of it or they just saying that so everybody else doesn't hit it hard as they do and then they get bigger. You know kindof like misinformation.

I mean is it fact that 9 sets will make the muscle grow(bis for example) more than 15 to 18 sets or is that just heresay.

Overtraining is different for everyone, but I would have to say that it definitely exists. Some people could get overtrained on 10 sets though, others might take 25. I've done a lot of experimenting with my training over the years, and cold always tell when I was doing too much. I start to feel really run down, and my strength and size start to drop. For me, the most common cause for overtraining is training too many days in a row, so now I avoid training more than 2 days at a time

Depends on if you're on or not, general overtraining or CNS problems, etc...

Personally, recovery is just as important to my routine as the work out. AR, hot tub, the right foods, etc... To me, the problem is more about under-recovering.

Needsize how many total sets do you do say on bi's and do you do bi's following your back workout.

Spatts,

You are right it does depend alot if you are one or not and these guys are gaining size and strength pretty fast so I am pretty sure they are on.

I do between 8-10 sets for my bi's when I train them on their own, if I hit them after back I do between 4-6 sets

Overtraining is not a myth!! I use low sets and I get incredible results. I am talking:

12-14 for legs, 9 for chest, back, and delts, and 6 for arms.

And how often do you hit them per week? And are you on or not?

thanks for the answer needsize.

If I train 3 days in a row, the third day I'm not quite up to par. If I train a fourth I will get sick. There is no way around it. Its a guarantee that I'll start getting a cold, sleep too much, etc. It sucks but it happens. I do a lot to avoid overtraining, listening to my body is a big part.
