He is correct. You shouldn't become dependent on the smith machine as you will not strengthen your stabilizer muscles. Core strength is VERY important.
Even though you may not be able to go as heavy, free-squatting it is still better than relying solely on the smithmachine. You shouldn't sacrifice form to lift a bit heavier.
