Do people always have to go to court for a divorce In the US? I never stepped one foot in a court in Canada. I had a mediation lawyer...it got all settled without having to spend lots of money on court proceedings

I settled mine in mediation as well and never stepped into a court. I tried to be reasonable. I was stupid. She still told the kids lies about me. I have huge issues with my oldest daughter because of her. I should have gone after her in court and paid the least amount posible. But I tried to do the right thing, however in hindsight the right thing would have been letting the court settle it. Instead of my dumb ass giving her a shitload of money. And I didn't fucking cheat on that bitch either.

I have a few things to say here:

1) Spy Wizard, STFU you're stupid. You're clearly still disturbed based on your abusive childhood. Nobody cares.
2) This douche of an ex is just purposely doing what he can to make your life (and those around him) hell. It must have been an enormous shot to his ego that you walked out on him. Now he's living with his Mommy. I bet he's a very angry and messed up person. Sounds like a complete waste of skin.
3) I hope you get things straightened out through the courts. If you are sole custodian (hope you win) then YES he is responsible for paying child support (fuck off to those here who don't agree).
4) I've been through a crappy divorce/custody thing but my ex didnt have a pot to piss in, didnt have any legal representation, no job, no decent family to support him, no car, no license, no bank account, no house. I too left him and I believe he still holds it against me 12 yrs later, but not nearly as bad as he did the first 5 yrs or so.

I'm so so sorry to hear that. I won't allow any man to do that to my boys. I've been dating a man for a year and he has met my kids 3 times. I'm super protective.

My plan is to get a bacclutette in nursing (I'm already in the program)
I'm working as a CNA at a hospital to get the reimbursement for tuition, but it doesn't pay enough.
I will not depend on a man to take care of me ever. After what I've been thru I'll always have an exit plan.
I'm thinking about re activating my real estate license and trying to do some of that on the
side. Even one sale a year would help a lot. But the market is super tough here.

If my ex would pay child support, I could rent a small house and give the boys what they need.

good for you and I'm glad to hear it.. some advice in regards to school for you.. is take infomatics classes if they are offered..

even with the RN degree and some experience you can transfer into that verticle and double what any nurse can make.. if you consider $85 per hour a good income..

but that's just my 1st hand experience..

How do you live off $1800/mo.?

Well...I'm skating by. Behind on my energy bill on a regular basis, always cook at home, we eat a lot of rice cause it's cheap. I can make ramin noodles like 10 different ways. Frozen veggies cause they keep. I have no cable or Internet (I post at work on my cell using thier wifi) or home phone. Cell phone plans are kept to the bare minimum. Only run the washer completely full, I try not to use the dryer if I can help it. Every time I drive it's a planned trip to conserve gas. I own my car. Some of my school loans I use to catch up on utilities. My rent is low. There is absolutely no money for anything but bills and food. Oh and I have no credit card debt.

The problem is one trip to the doctor, the car breaking down, any unexpected expense puts me in danger of beig homeless.
