How do you prepare Steel cut oats?

I bought a can of steel cuts oats (oat meal) and tried to prepare it like regular oatmeal. Just heat water in the microwave, pour the oat meal in, let it sit for about 2 mins. and it should be nice and soggy and ready to eat. Well this shit was hard as hell, even after 5 mins. Not bad tasting with 2 tsp. of flax seed meal and 1 tsp. of splenda, just too crunchy.

How do you guys prepare steel cut oats?

how does the flaxseed meal taste? i saw that in the grocery store, but didn't grab it. price wasn't bad.

and what is splenda?

anything that'll make the oatmeal taste good besides pnut butter would be nice. i'm cooking 1/3 cup of it 3x a day (cause i can't eat 1/2 cup of it in one sitting twice a day) and just getting sick of the taste.

thanks.

Flax seed meal is not bad tasting and it has a lot of fiber and good fats.
Splenda is a sweetner that has 0 cals. 0 carbs 0 fats. and it tastes just as sweet as sugar. Try it, it will make the oatmeal taste much better.

"Try soaking them overnight in the water. That usually softens them up nicely."

Does this in any way change its nutrients?

Flaxseed Meal - I think it has a nutty flavor and I really like it... got some at Trader Joe's - yellow package.

Some of my additions to oatmeal:

flaxseed meal
cinnamon
soy milk
egg whites
raisins

mix and match of course!

DEFINITELY SOAK THEM OVERNIGHT!! I don't see where you'd lose any nutrients...maybe the texture...but the important stuff is still there, right?

For faster cooking time, I steam mine for 5-10min and then boil.
